But if you are a reloader and esp. if you salvage stuff, they are a good investment.

The possible problem with that (or using pliers the same way), Mike, is damaging the threads on the insert. Been there and done that once. That's why I now use a wire stripper placed flat across the top of the press. No chance of damaging the threads. Easier to use also.


I run my bullets up thru a flat washer and that way the end nipper rubs on on the washer and not the press threads.  I done several hundred rounds over the years without any problems.  Its fast and easy to use.

I have used a variety of bullet pullers over the years and have found that the Forster collet type does the best job for me.  It only requires light tension on the bullet and does not put a deep grove in the projectile like other collet pullers, especially with cast bullets.

In the original post of mine I did not indicate that I did indeed wanted to save the pulled bullets with as little deformation as possible. Hence the search for a collet style puller. I rigged up one but it slipped off the money bullet nose/ogive----probably would have worked just fine on a creedmore profile. So I went back to gently taping with the inertia hammer.....worked fine but slow, and the powder column & wad stayed in place.
