This is funny. .32-40 High wall at Yard Sale

Went to a yard sale today, waiting outside for the doors to open.  The lady opens the door, and there's a couple of rifles just inside the door in the FREE bin.  One is a .32-40, Octagon top High wall.

Here's the punch line:  Guy right in front of me, reaches down, grabs both rifles and goes on.

I had to pay him $150 at his car to get the high wall from him.  He kept the crackshot or similar stevens.

No internals (I have all of the parts), but good thick side octagon top receiver and decent outside #3 28" octagon barrel, great markings but absolutely rotted out bore.

Wow! I’d call that a very good day!  If I were you I would have stopped and bought a lottery ticket on the drive home.

Sounds familiar as far as being seconds late on occasion! At least you got it! I'm sure he's telling his friends how he sold a free barreled action for $150 in just seconds!
Too funny!

Very nice.
I would go back and leave a card with your name and phone and a note you would buy any parts if they find them.

It was the tail end of an estate, they had a sale a year or so ago of the shop stuff, just now cleaning out the house.  Not much there, and nobody that knows what's going on.

Was a good week for me.

Yesterday, I had to drive about 8 hours to pick up a couple of lathes a mill, a partial bridgeport, and a bunch of tooling.  Price was exceptional.

But, the good news of it is that the large lathe is a decent size quick change Logan that has a large but relatively short spindle that should take any octagon barrel I choose to use.  And, I have a mill for the first time in 15 years.  I have a new fully finished, heated and climate controlled shop to put these in.  I'll be able to do full gunsmithing work again, which I haven't since I left Cedar City in 2005.  I'm fully set up with equipment; lathe, mill, drill press, belt sander, disc sander, router table and saws, stock duplicator, mig, tig, stick welder, torch, over 30 feet of solid built in work bench with 9 different vises set up, etc.

The smaller lathe is a 6" Craftsman and change gears, but a power feed, screw cutting lathe, not the hand feed one.  Don't know if I'll keep it or not.  Not as useful as a person might think.  Buying precision tooling for the large lathe might be a better choice, with the money the small lathe will bring in.

The mill is a decent Taiwanese benchtop with R8 collets, so will do everything needed except cut octagon barrels, not enough table travel.

When I left Rhode Island for a job in Michigan in 1993 I had to leave behind a Burke Millrite.  It was a real good little mill.  Made all sorts of parts for race bikes on it.   You made a good buy there.

Yesterday was my break even day on the lathe/mill deal I described above.

I sorted through all the tooling.  I kept the Logan Lathe.  I kept the mill.

I sold the Bridgeport head, the small Craftsman lathe, and some of the tooling that I had no use for.  Yesterday I sold the last big piece of tooling, and now I'm $60 ahead of what I paid for the whole lot, so I got a free lathe, Mill, and tooling for an 8 hour drive to get it and about 8 hours selling off the extra pieces.

Cool!

I have one of those craftsman/atlas lathes. Its pretty lightweight built but will do small stuff. Still looking for a mill. Just bought a new place with a shop and have room now.

Great find.  I went to a house sale late a month or so ago, it had been going on for a couple hours.  A ton of reloading gear and brass and such.  I saw a Lyman Targetspot sitting on the "hold table" as sold.  Walked around the house for 30 min.  Then walked back out to the pay table, and realized the scope was on just a display table.  It was not sold.  Grabbed it and paid about half the going rate.  Everyone before me ignored it.
