Buffalo Powder in 38-56

Starting to refine loads for my 38-56 Rolling Block shooting an Accurate Moulds 38-320J slightly modified to fit my rifle.  Groups are 5 shots at 50 yards with an aperture front sight and MVA rear.  I have a hard time seeing the bull at 100 yards so most of my development is at 50 to begin with.  If I was to change one thing it would be to reduce the nose riding section by 0.001 to match the bore.  It is now 0.001 oversize and takes some effort with the 20:1 alloy to chamber with no leverage on the roller.  Still it is not difficult.  I tried one load of 20 grains with the bullet seated into the second grease groove  and then loads of 20, 21, 22 and 23 seated in the first grease groove so I could just chamber by pushing the loaded case in with my thumb.  Accuracy was about the same so will try both depths again with 10 shot groups.  At 23 grains I started to get vertical stringing so it is out of contention but 20 grains and 22 grains are showing promise.  The trouble with 5 shot groups is that if I don't see the bull good on one shot it opens the group up where if I shot 10 shots I would have a better feel.  I had to cuss myself out three times for not making sure the extractor was beneath the case when chambering and then having to knock the loaded case out with a ramrod and push it in again.   Lips Sealed  Tom

At one time, 5744 was made by Explosia in the Czech Republic who makes Buffalo powder.  I'm guessing that Buffalo powder is the same as Czech 5744.  I have some of the Czech 5744 as well as the new stuff and it works very much like the current manufacture 5744.  It may be slightly slower, but that could just be lot variation.
