Basic Rules for Hardening Lead-
For every 1% additional tin, Brinell hardness increases 0.3.
For every 1% additional antimony, Brinell hardness increases 0.9.
For a simple equation,
Brinell = 8.60 (Antimonial Lead) + ( 0.29 * Tin ) + ( 0.92 * Antimony )

14×16÷26×25÷20-14×16÷26=2.154
[   oz Pb now  ]      [oz Sn now]  [add Sn]
[  oz Sn you need ]

Probably a simpler way, but I'm algebraically challenged. At least it works on my Samsung phone calculator.

if I added 1 part tin by weight to 25 parts lead by weight, I have 26 parts. Is this 25 to 1 mixture?

I am not so sure if that is actually correct it should end up at 25 and not 26 but I could also be wrong. Either way I highly doubt if it would make any difference if always doing it the same way. I believe it is based on Proportioning and not by weight.

"1 to 25" is a ratio not a proportion. It could be expressed as 1:25 or one pound of tin to every 25 pounds of lead. A proportion (or fraction if you will) would be 1/25 of the 25 pounds is tin and the rest is lead.

I've always understood it as 20:1 is 1 pound of tin to 19 pounds of lead so that you end up with 20 lbs. of alloy ?

The expression for that 20 pounds would be 1:19 or 1 pound of tin to 19 pounds of lead, or 1/20 of the 20 pounds of alloy is tin.

From RotoMetals it is 5% Tin & 95% Lead to equal 1-20

So 5% of 20 would equal 1 (part tin)

And 95% of 20 would equal 19 (parts lead)

Correct?

1-20 doesn't mean anything. Tin in this case is 1/20 (5%) of the total. 1/20 means something and that something is 5% of the total. That mixture is actually 1:19, 1 to 19. It should not be called 1 to 20, that is mathematically incorrect. 1 to 20 (1:20, 1 pound of tin to 20 pounds of lead) would be  4.76% tin. If you want to pay for more tin and you find computing 5% of the weight of your lead and adding that much tin, go for it.

GrumpyBear according to the folks who make it and sell it as such and that being RotoMetals I am in no position to question it.
