Anyone tried any of the Vitavouri smokeless powders in large straight-walled cartridges? I'm specifically interested in 38-55 loads with it. Their powders are mainly considered useful in more modern cartridges. I use N140 and N150 in my 6.5X55 sniper and target rifles and it performs flawlessly, burns spankingly clean; consistency is super and its shelf life is much longer than most smokeless powders. It is, however, pretty expensive but the results are worth it to me.

There are several VV powders in their lineups and I can't imagine one or two not working well in a 38-55 cartridge.

Geezer,
I've used a little Vihtavuori in a couple of different cartridges, the 44-85 and the 40-82 - searching and experimenting trying to find a sweet spot.  To my knowledge, "V" doesn't have a lot of data that relates to our interest, but I wish they would.   There have been some interesting discoveries in my experimentation, one that stood out that really never presented a problem but was there - the bore turned "grey" and took considerable effort bringing it back to shiny... another thing that I found was load density was very low, similar to the other smokeless powders I prefer.  A minor difference I noted, with most of my "other" powder preferences, there was always "unburned" powder kernels left in the bore, never seemed to be the case with "V".
I've moved on from my experimenting with these cartridges and haven't had the time (or energy) to experiment with the new projects I have going.  Also, the new projects are not the stronger actions like I was experimenting with earlier so I hesitate to dabble in a lot of cases.
I would recommend contacting a representative from Vihtavuori to see if they can get you headed in the right direction.  Some of these powder companies will share data in a conversation, but they won't publish.
Another option, invest in something like a "Pressure Trace" system and work through the steps with it.  This is an avenue I have chose, it's just requires an excessive amount of TIME for the research and that's been a precious commodity lately...
Good luck and I'm looking forward to some results.
Greg

I have used several Vihtavuori powders in a few old cartridges with very good results. Viht 3N37 is especially good in my 577-450 MH using several bullets up to 500 grains with no filler. I have a Pressure-Trace system that I can use but it does not read consistently at low pressures and doesn't help in this case. I also use Quick-Load and find it matches up very well if you are very diligent about getting all the inputs right. Good luck, ratseye

I have used N133 with reasonable success. Started a load work up last spring and got sidetracked.

Fixed cartridge, 395 grain bullet, 28 grains was 1470-1495 fps. Bullet seated .500” deep with a .060” wad. Groups were about 1.5” at 100 yards, so showed enough promise to re visit. Just not a good summer to get it done.

Quickload estimate 29,000 psi.

VVN120 works well in the Miller short and 32-40 but its hard to justify the price when other powders work just as well. I have also done some 28-35 load development using Accurate LT-30. Shoots extremely well but it also takes allot more powder to get the same results as 300MP so no advantage to its use either.

VVN120 I believe is the most common powder used in the 8.15X46R in Bavaria.

Along with a tissue paper filler.  There are times they must shut matches down due to tissue residue (dust) in the air causing a health issue.

I've used it in 32-40 without a filler. Works good, or just like 4227. VV may be superior to the new 4227 as far as metering through a measure.
