Reloading screw up

I was in the middle of swaging out peened case lips using a Lyman neck sizing die and a pin gauge.  It’s a good technique which you can read about at
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
About half way through 200 cases everything was going smooth until the necks came out of the die with lots of scratches.  Although the cases were clean, they were stored in a cartridge box with the necks down.  I forgot to wipe each one to eliminate any grit on the necks prior to inserting in the die.  Apparently one picked up some grit which embedded in the die.  After polishing out the die with 1200 grit emery and finishing with jeweler’s rouge I was back in business.  So be sure to wipe those cases prior to resizing.

Brian,

Not in this case.  Using a bore scope I could definitely see the embedded particles.  After polishing it's now smooth as a babies bottom.

"I was in the middle of swaging out peened case lips"

That sounds painful. Was it from tumbling?

It's a pretty simple process until I ran into the problem.  Yes, the peening is from tumbling.  BTW, I'm betting the grit was from sharpening some tools on the same bench.  I thought I'd cleaned up well afterwards but remember dropping one of the cases & it rolled around on the bench before I grabbed it.

I contaminated my Imperial wax once.  Had been lapping a barrel.

If you can will you show us your peened case repair process? I've been using a very sharp pocket knife to remove the burr inside the neck. Finding it works better than my Wilson de-burring tool.

I'm still tumbling but for only an hour or so. Unless I forget I'm tumbling.  Sad

Should get a timer. Smiley

westerner & semtav,

I use a lyman neck resizing die that allows full access to the die chamber from the top of the die with the extractor rod removed.  With the case setting in the case holder, a pin gauge or hard steel rod (I use a drill bit) of the appropriate diameter is inserted into the top of the die and the case raised into the die.  As the case enters the neck of the die it's squeezed against the rod & flattens out the peened edge.

Using this process is fast and does not remove any material.  removing the edge with a sharp instrument will result in shortening the case.

Following is a photo of the process.  The top portion of the 0.403" diameter drill bit is taped to protect my fingers and also is a guide to indicate how far to insert the bit.  The brass is .40-65.

A slight variation of the same technique is to drop a pin or plug gauge into the case prior to inserting the case into the die, but then you'll have to pull the gauge out of the case.  The long rod or drill bit through the top of the die works better for me.
