Reloading for 12.7x44r Carl Gustav 1875 RB

This is my first post on ASSRA, so I cannot post photos yet.

I just yesterday acquired a Carl Gustav 1875 Rolling Block
12.7x44r beauty for $500.  Wonderful condition.  149 years old !

Been cleaning out the Bore - still not sure I got it ALL cleaned out.

The previous owner was shooting it with Starline 50 Alaskan Brass, so I decided to go with that also.  Just ordered 50 cases
from Buffalo Arms.

The previous owner gave me a LEE Bullet Mold he was going to use in this beauty - it is a "Modern Mini" number 90471.
I will try showing the Bullet in a reply below - If I am allowed right now.

The Brass has been reduced to 1.73 inch long (he had ten cases).

What I want to ask is:

What size Die Set COULD I use to set the bullet on a 50 Alaskan Brass Case ?
I realize there are no dies for this rifle, but I have a Lathe and could turn down a 50 Alaskan Bullet Seating Die - I think !

Maybe MAKE one - but THAT is more than I want to get into right now.....

Would a 50-70 Bullet Seating Die work - if modified ?

Some other size die ?

Here is the LEE Cast Bullet Shape and dimensions.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

0.788" long,  0.506" diameter,   363 grains as cast from pure lead.

Here is the Beauty !

This is a diagram of the Receiver Internal Dimensions with
a bullet in Battery (as I propose to do).

NEVER MIND !

I think I figured out a way w/o buying more dies.....

I was fussing over what Dies to buy to Get Bullets seated into the Carl Gustav 12.7x44r Brass cases.

BUT - I had an epiphany !   The LEE Universal Expansion Die Set (of which I have one) will spread
case necks up to .45 Caliber.  Examining the tool, it became obvious what I had to do !
Make another (.50 Caliber) Expansion Button along the lines of the LEE device but in 0.506 inch diameter.
I have a Lathe.....need say no more.

I made this:

and used it to do this:

Once the case is expanded, seating the bullet uses the exact same Die just pushing the bullet into the case.

Now all I have to do is make a taper crimper on the Lathe - a sloped sided hole in a metal cylinder......to squeeze the case back down around the bullet.

I dood it !

Let me Google that for you:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) 12.7 X 44R
Sounds like yours has been altered to take the Alaska case

I use .50-70 Govt. die set to reload for mine. And .50-70 brass shortened to fit.

I really like the Lee universal expander dies because it is so easy to make custom plugs.  I've made quite a few including this one for a .44 cal #2 RRB I converted to centerfire.  It expands the case for a heel bullet with a .410" heel.  If you look closely, you see it is is stepped.  The first part is .407" which provides tension on the heel.  The second part is .413" to allow the heel to enter the case moth easily.

You have a good start but I would suggest slugging the bore unless the previous owner gave you that info. I am shooting Starline 50 Alaskan in my Hanquet Cape rifle without modification except trimming to length. Several different powders work well in it. Here is a drawing of the original case dimensions. Ratseye

I am going through a rather painful process of forming cases from 348 Win.  Cut necks off at shoulder and figured a hefty charge of BP and wad would blow them out into chamber so I could trim with my .50-70 trim die.  But, nooooooo!  Looks like I need to use some kind of bullet to build up pressure in case, but would be waaaaay under bore.  Incidentally, my newest rifle is a commercial Husqvarna Number 2.  The commercial chambers will not chamber any brass I use in my M67 rifles, even run through the CH4D 12.7x44R dies.  I suspect the dies were designed off of the sloppy M67 military chambers.  The unaltered 348 Win brass chambers fine, but will require much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Ugh!
