Another ten years???

My favorite line about Ballards... a Ballard adds ten years to your life...   Grin
Made it to my first gun show (Cody Collectors Show) of any consequence for the year this weekend and my support group was in full force too!  Thanks Tony,  thanks Kim.  I might have walked away without anything if it hadn't of been for them.
It appears to be a #9 Ballard in 32-40.  I got home, had to cast some bullets, lube, and then put some loads together.  Late afternoon, the wind laid down but for us the heat was up - HOT  98°.  It went bang and everything did as it should but the groups show nothing definitive - mostly me I'm sure.
Have to do something with the sights but everything else should remain the same...
We talk about buyer's remorse, I get it when I buy a vehicle, a camper, a boat, RV, even a bolt gun -usually exists- but a Ballard? Never.   Smiley

Very nice rifle Greg. There's no way I could have gone home without it.

Buyer's remorse and single shot purchases should never be spoke of in the same conversation.  Cool

Jerry,
I agree, and I really like the comment you made to me one time, "If I ever found a cure for this buying problem, don't tell me what it is"  Grin

Rodney,
It does look good!  Has been used a lot but that adds to it.

The barrel makes me wonder if it's original, the serial number is stamped on it but the number font's appear slightly different.  The wood, breech block and butt plate all carry matching numbers.  The barrel and the action have some marking like not enough care was taken when these were separated once.  And the extractor is actually marked 38-55.  Any guesses?

I would imagine that without some nice old Ballard rifles in my life, I'd have died years ago!  Cool

Nice find! Ballards seem to "hide" at gunshows. Both of the ones I've had in my life were not easily visible, but on the table  since their owners were not really in a hurry to part with them.Found my first one in Portland Oregon, and my current one in Denver. It may take me the ten years to get it to shoot properly, but it's so beautiful I'm happy to be along for the ride.

Congratulations Greg, nice looking rifle.  That other rifle with the scratches all over the side of it is nice also....I’m jealous of both!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Greg, it's not unusual for a Ballard in .32-40 or .38-55 to have an extractor that is marked for the other caliber. I've seen it often as I've seen them unmarked, or correctly marked. I'm sure the workers grabbing them from parts bins knew it didn't matter, and grabbed what worked.
That's a great looking Union Hill, and I think it's a dandy! I love the honest appearance it has myself.

Thanks all!
Hoping for more range time with this one.
Ran the Teslong camera down the bore, there are some issues, the last 1/8" of rifling is gone, tapers out to nothing... it will be interesting to see what it does.

00,
Huh
I reminisced to the wife about some of my wanderings in the area back in my teens, the sport events our schools competed in, and wondered out loud if you would've been there then?

Nice # 9 Ballard! I agree with  Val on the condition, good honest wear and should be fun to shoot. I would guess the lack of rifling at the muzzle can only be determined by how well it shoots. I’ve never seen that before, but I would tend to think it’s effects would be minimal assuming the crown is good.
I was fortunate last year to pick up a #8  Ballard at the Tulsa show. It had all matching numbers except the butt stock, the stock was crudely carved out of an older 2x6! I bought it pretty cheap, came and looked in my parts drawer and I had a Union Hill stock that fit up perfectly. I had bought the stock from Gary Quinlan back in 2011! Never know you might need one!
