range loading snafu

Got out to the range this morning at 5 with my 32-40 Ruger #3 Schuetzen that is fairly new to me. I've had it out about three times and initially wasn't running the velocity high enough and getting tippers but the last time out it seemed to be coming around. This morning I went out and I just was getting tons of vertical stringing driving me crazy. So I switched from 4227 to a  different powder
Same results. Then I got a shot that sounded really weird. I'm loading with a Belding and mull measure and I have a funnel screwed to the base to charge the case. One of my de capped primers had fallen in the funnel and was partially blocking the hole so I was  getting varying powder charges.
I knocked the primer out of there and then my groups were quite a bit better but I only had 15 bullets left!

just one if those days. But still better than work

It's those little things that at times can be hard to figure out. Happy to hear you sorted it out and identified the problem so you now know what to look for should it happen to you again.

I have been concentrating on my 28 cal for a while, but when I did shoot my main match rifle, a 32-40 High Wall, It wasn't quite there like it had been in the past.  In fact, at the last match in September, seemed 'out of sorts".  I decided to check everything besides just powder and bullets and found that my seater had backed out a bit and was seating the bullets .030 deeper than I had recorded as the most accurate setting.  Fixed that and at the range yesterday shot a couple of 5 shot groups less than 1" high and about 1.5" wide at 200 yds.  All is well again.

Chuck Bordman kept blowing primers one day at Spokane.  Turned out his Manley Oakley breech seater had backed off. Bullet wasn't going in far enough.

Little Miller short didn't like that.  Shocked

I am going to Loctite my main seaters for my 28 G&H and 32-40 and carry a second one that I can experiment with for those rifles.  More stuff for the range bag!

Having the seater change its setting is more common than most might think. And typically the first thing one wants to look at when the groups start falling apart.

I even have the OAL written in sharpie on the seater and a dial caliper in my range box. Need to write a note on my powder measure or something!

That's a good idea. Thanks, Jack. Now, where did I put my sharpie? I should write down where it is.......................

I keep my settings in a note book that I keep in my shooting bag and I also keep a Vernier inside there as well. I measure from the face of the rim to the end of the seater plug. I just find it abit easier for myself to take the measurement from.

Most of my breech seaters will not come out of adjustment. My Manley seater can, or could. Maybe I fixed it. Don't remember.  Undecided

Jack

I would use blue or green Loctite.

Not green loctite. That's pretty much permanent,  blue or purple will allow adjustments.

Then I went to the range yesterday to test and forgot my wing flags on a very windy day Sad
