The inverse side of the story that can also be considered is that he ran off and abandoned his wife and children when he went to San Francisco.  It is also possible that he never set up shop there, but rather just wasted all his money on drugs and prostitutes.  About the time of the earthquake he had blown his wad and was broke.  He never took employment, but instead sat around and did who knows what until his friends bailed him out.  He never paid his friends back, and ended up alienating himself from Rowland for a simple comment he made.  Rowland was the main financial contributor to helping Pope get back on his feet. I have seen a letter from Rowland to Pope in which Rowland is explaining himself and asking Pope to forgive him, which he never did.  Pope was undoubtedly a very talented barrel maker, very talented marksman, and very much an a-hole.

To me, it is interesting to consider other explanations regardless of how unpopular they are, rather than just accept the fairy tale story that we have been told.

Thanks Johnboy,  If that article written is from an interview by the author, it takes a lot of the speculation posted here and shows what it really is, just speculation or "I heard from".

Why can't you just let Harry Pope rest in peace for a change. He just simply lived his own life the way that he chose to do so.

If that article written is from an interview by the author

That article, which John Boy and I have both referenced, is indeed based on one or more interviews with Pope and contains what are presented as direct quotes, many quite lengthy, not paraphrases thereof.

And if people like CodyS wish to believe that Pope lied about his San Francisco experience in that and other interviews, that's their privilege.  However, if they state their counter beliefs publicly, they need to back them up.

Geez, who would have thought offering an alternative explanation would upset folks so much?

As for sources, I am getting some of my ideas from conversations with a couple of different well researched schuetzen shooters that have many letters of Rowland's, Pope's, and others in their collections, as well as a tremendous amount of other old material.  There is enough info in that material to make one wonder if all the Pope stories we know are true.

The question I have is there other info to back up your beliefs on Pope other than what came from himself?  Of course he is going to sugar coat his own story.  I think it is interesting to learn the real stories, not just the fairy tale, dime novel versions.
respectfully, Cody

Pope did indeed work in San Francisco after the earthquake that took his shop, which was only open I believe 3 days. He went to work for John Sidle the famous rifle scope maker and stayed with Sidle for I believe over a year from what I've read.
But I believe whatever wages he made there would likely have been eaten up by normal day to day living costs, so not likely he made enough to save for the trip home.

That is interesting, I don't think I had read that.

Has anyone found any accounts concerning Pope's San Francisco shop other than from Pope?

What I want to know is who was this redhead Harry ran off with?

Probly wasn't Harry's fault anyway.

Seems to me I read it somewhere or maybe I heard it from somebody but I'm not sure I can remember everything but I think it was Annie Oakley. He had the hots for her cuz she was such a good shot. Smiley

Codys, I appreciate your input, some or all of it may be incorrect, but they are possibilities. Nobody is perfect. No matter what he was a damn good barrel maker.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly sure I read a brief article in a contemporary San Francisco or nearby newspaper that noted Pope's shop being destroyed.  Not surprising when you consider how big schuetzen shooting was in that area and how famous Pope's name was in that circle; indeed I'd guess that's why Pope went out there.

How many contemporary gunsmiths, shooters, collectors and writers will be remembered 100 years from now. Baseball, Football, Hockey  etc... all have Halls of Fame. The shooting sports was the largest spectator sport back when Pope was active. Pope would be the 1st inductee to our Hall of Fame.
