I purchased this little 4 power scope many years ago at a St. Charles Mo gun show. I had just finished reading "The M-L Cap lock Rifle" and was planning on building a target/squirrel rifle. I was even going to build a rifling bench and rifle the barrel and purchased a 40 cal blank. Well that didnt happen. I am now thinking of mounting it on my 45-70 RB. I have seen a few others but they all had a black finish on them. This one appears to have left the factory with a polished brass finish. It is missing one of the mounting plates that should be easy enough to make. Any idea on date of manuf.? Thanks, Ed

My guess is somebody removed the "Japan" finish off the tube at some time in it's life. I've never heard of any left in bare brass, but seen many that people made this way later. Hard to tell what happened over so many decades.

I have a Wollensak 4X scope and it's actually very clear and has all the black finish except a couple of scratches. I built a little off-hand target rifle that has iron sights so I could practice in the backyard but some failing eyesight has me wanting to see if I could fit some Unertl style mounts on the rifle and try that Wollensak.  I'm not sure the standard Unertl mount spacing will work but This scope is an older model and doesn't have the click adjustments so I could probably get away with a shorter mount spacing. The rifle is a 22 single shot that I use CCI CB ammo if and when I can find it.

I bought a very, very, clean looking Wollensak scope with the original box on eBay. When it arrived, I found it was missing every lens but one! Hahaha!

Lesson learned.... Sad

I like Wollensak scopes, and I've acquired several of them in different states of disrepair. Whether they be Wollensak or similar old scopes, the lenses and parts seem to be interchangeable. I think the clearest one I have is made up of lenses from different scopes. What I did was to use a "V" block to line up the lenses until they seemed to resolve, then assemble them. I know I've gotten lucky, but they're nice little scopes, the only problem I have with them is that they're unusually heavy. Tongue

Col. Whelen covered the Wollensak scopes in his little book on telescope sights published in 1936, so there would be your manufacturing time frame.

He included the Wollensak and the “very similar” Sears&Roebuck scope in the chapter on “Junior Rifle Scopes,” which were made for light .22 rifles and not up to the recoil of large game or big bore target rifles.  However, he did mention that he knew of a Wollensak which had been mounted on a .25-20 rifle and used “with perfect results.”

The Wollensak, with mounts, cost $10.00 back then; the Sears-Roebuck $9.95.

Sears had the patent rights to these mounts, and sold the patent to Marlin in 1936 in an agreement with Marlin to build the 3 point #1 mounts, and 4 point #2 mounts.
It's been suggested the scope tubes were made by Wollensak for both Sears, and Marlin, with Marlin building the mounts for all three companies. Marlin made mounts, with Wollensak scopes were first offered by Sears in their 1937 catalog, and were marked "Ranger" on the little rectangle adjustment covers, where Wollensak normally marked their name. Scopes sold by Marlin in their gold box were unmarked on the tubes.

I had my Wollensak mounted of a home made 22 rifle although I had to make home made Unertl type bases for it so I could test the scope and the rifle. Everything worked great but the home made mounts looked so ugly I put the scope back in the nice little case I made. Since the rifle was "Home Made" with bits and pieces of old rifles there were no iron sights available for it so It got put away also. I just ordered some Unertl type mounts from Brownells and I really would like to get the scope set up correctly.

I believe that these are Marlin #2 mounts for the Wollensak scope. Steel with 7/8 inside diameter front ring. Click adjustments.

Currently looking for scope or sleeve.

Yes, those appear to be the higher quality Marlin #2 mounts. Sleeves are the same, as are the front rings. So any Wollensak, Marlin, or Sears Ranger sleeve will fit. Not sure if I have any in my parts box? Have to check today.

I made a sleeve for my scope marked ranger,by using a shaft adapter sleeve for an electric motor. I used a 3/4" to 7/8" pulley shaft adapter. They have a 3/16" key way slot, and are about 3"long, and came blued. Not as nice as an original sleeve, but it will work okay.

I came across this interesting scope at a garage sale. Have been trying to research it and have uncovered, I think - that it is a Wallensak 4x scope, made for Sears as a Ranger 4x. Can't determine anything about the mount. I believe it is a side mount and was thinking maybe it was for the Sears 101.16 / Stevens 87 rifle. Can anyone lend an assist on this.  The scope is in very nice shape, looks almost new, a little minor scratching, no dents, cross hairs are good and glass looks good also. Thinking about trying to find the rifle to go with it...
