I do the same as GT and Joe. I keep a jag with a soaked patch already to go in a small lidded can with more patches and some lube if needed. My can is one of the big cans of Shinola polish that must be fifty years old. I don't know if I can still get one when it wears out- but, it's better than Joe's baggy.  Roll Eyes

I'm perty new at this compared to all you old timers. I been doing this pre-lube thing only a couple years. Yes the zip lock bag is a messy hit and miss affair. Now that Pat and GT have schooled me and I now know shit from Shinola, I'm going to prep my patches and store them in a tin. I got a nifty pipe tobacco tin in mind. Around here somewhere...., where is that damned thing, grumble......

When done cleaning using Ed's Red I always use the lube I'm shooting and run patches thru to keep the bore cured and coated.Like we all did shooting ML's......Works for me.....Now the stuff on the bottom of your shoe...if it smells like Dog S#&T well that might work also...But ASK JOE first!......

Never cured or seasoned a barrel like the rest of you.

Couple weeks ago I pre-lubed a barrel I have little time with. All I could do to keep it in the red. Cleaned the barrel and started on the second target. Second target was far better than the first. Sub minute of angle.

So this just goes to show that, about the time you think you know shit from Shinola, well, you may have a ways to go yet.

This raises an interesting subject....the best shooting I've done is with fresh lube. I think lube has a shelf life, and if you lube your bullets the night before the match, there might be an advantage to it. I know that if the lube on your bullets is old, you'll have a leaded barrel as quick as you can say Bob's your uncle.  Tongue

Put the kidding aside. A Gun Maker friend uses Xylene for his lead remover. This stuff does work. A couple wet patches and then a very tight patch and if there is any lead in the barrel it will bring it out. I now carry a small bottle of this stuff in my Schuetzen box.

Pete, the thread is about preventing leading in the bore.  Not how to remove it.

No more kidding? Seriously?  You too?

Used 4227 and 300MP, both work the same for me, as in leading.300 with the mag primers might make it burn hotter ?   No kidden,go figure, test other lubes....

I tried it years ago Joe it's really harsh stuff and it will burn your skin if not careful it did so to myself. If you haven't tried Namptha it might be worth you giving it a try. I have been both cleaning and pre-lubing using Ballistol right out the can it has worked out very well for myself.

Seems to me I remember a Coors match being lost due to Xylene.......

I seldom have leading problems. Hoppes removes it nicely when I do.

I have both Badger (45-70) and RKS barrels (40-65 and S.S.). I have only ever had small flakes of lead in the Badger, never in the RKS barrels.

Not sure why some people  have leading problems. It could be the barrel or maybe even how their bullet relationship is to rifling for a chambered round. I've always cammed my bullets into the rifling by say, 0.030", either by when the breach block closes (44 1/2 and Highwall) or with a camming stick, Hepburn.

Camming the bullet into the "rifling", so to speak, might help seal the bore against powder gases upon ignition, and greatly reducing gas-cutting. I also don't have the need to do any crimping. My bullets are a slip-fit in the case.

If you are having leading problems, and aren't camming into the "rifling", give this a try and see if it works for you in reducing leading. I also do not see an appreciable difference is my lubed bullets are years old or recently lubed. My old lube (SPG) can look dried out and I also get what looks like tin-whisker growth, but I have not seen any ill results due to this.

I currently wipe between shots, and also run a moist patch down the bore, to lube it, prior to the first shot out of a clean barrel, but also when I did blow-tube I also did not have leading problems.

I have found most anything will work if one realizes it's starting to lead up. We once had a fellow who just keep on shooting his leaded barrel and the more he shot it the more the leading built up. I am not sure if he ever got all of the lead out he was down at the other end of line from me. He some how got his cleaning rod stuck trying to get it out and he had the rifle upside down slamming the handle of his cleaning rod onto the concrete floor. Last I saw of it, it was still stuck in the barrel and folks were standing around shaking their heads
