I knew a local dealer who had a nice collection of various oversized examples like the one shown. He claimed they were made primarily if not exclusively as a kind of trade sign to attract attention at trade shows and other public exhibitions.

The Unertl's were the scope of choice back in the early jacketed benchrest and the smallbore matches during those. And thankful that they were or they would be impossible for us to still be able to get.

What is also extremely interesting is how they held up in Vietnam and probably some of the worst conditions for them to be in.

Unertl himself said his scopes towards the end never paid the bills, and barely sold for enough to cover costs. He said that their instruments, and sighting devices for military and other uses were the profitable sales. He kept building scopes for competitive shooters simply because that was the heritage of the company, and they wanted to keep building them for future generations.

heard the same thing, face to face, decades ago. I think comment is credible.
About the same time he also said, the lens coatings for the sniper scope alone were several hundred dollars.
