Does anyone know if Triple Seven can be used in 45-70 for original 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle? Looking for loads for 405g and 500g bullets.

Thanks

Roger

Trapdoors run much better on Black Powder. Use the Arsenal 405 and 500 gr loads. Nothing has ever improved on them.

Thanks Boats, I'm assuming Arsenal is a brand of black powder. Unfortunately I am in Canada and Goex seems to be the only black powder available locally.

Apology's by Arsenal I mean the standard US Arsenal produced loads. If Black is not posable I shot a lot of 330 gr cast sized .459 and modest charges of Unique.  Fast pistol powders best stay with light bullets & carefully check for double  charges.

I used a drop gauge. Wood turned slip fit inside the case grove at correct case mouth position. Heavy brass knob to make it drop. Don’t need that fancy do need to double check.

Many years ago I started hunting quail with a 12 ga muzzleloading double shotgun and was using ffg black.  Fouling was somewhat of a problem so I switched to Pyrodex.  I hunted one day with that powder and 30 years later I think I still have that can.  There was a definite lag time between pulling the trigger and the gun going bang with fake blackpowder that was very noticeable while wingshooting.  I started soaking my cushion wads in lube and learned to control the fowling and never looked back.  After shooting Blackpowder loads in my 40-70 SS it is much easier to clean the bore than when shooting smokeless.  Now cleaning the cases is another thing!  Tom

I don't know if it's available in Canada (although I think it's made there) try some Blackhorn 209. They have published loads for the 45-70 and you can keep the pressures in the "Trap Door" zone.  Much more user friendly than BP.

Used 777FFg and Swiss ffg interchangably in 12,7X44R, 45 Colt, 44-40 and 12ga 28gr fiberwad loads for many years. These were full, normal loads, NOT the wimpy loads common in SASS.

Really no difference in down range performance, even to 300M with 12,7X44R, or 44-40 at 100M, No wiping after each shot. Only cleaned my Brazilian 1892 44-40 and Ruger Vaqueros 44-40 & 45 Colt after each days CA match, and often shot "clean" with 1892 and sometimes with revolvers. Won BP trap at Pheonix one year and now and then ranked high at 200M to 300M informal gong shoots with 12,7X44R.

At end of day, only difference when cleaning bores was that powder fouling from Swiss was the usual soft stuff that took only a few wet and dry patches to clean up fully. Powder fouling from 777FFg was just as easy to clean and far less visible in bore.

Do it right, with well-assembled standard loads for caliber and both 777 FFg and Swiss FFg shoot well in guns with excellent bores. Don't recommend anything Goex makes for anything other than blanks. Shot 7-8 deer with Pyrodex FFg and 777FFg in 54cal muzzle loader -- one shot one kill. No complaints.

You can find the Wolf publishing book titled "Loading Cartridges for the Original 45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine" by J.S. and Pat Wolf on Amazon. Great source for shooting your trapdoor. Have fun with it!

I was able to get an e-copy of the book and have read it through a couple of times, starting to distill down the info to load some bp cartridges for the my Springfield, should be here by the end of next week.
