30/30 165 gr plain base load

Print Post
Loading some fixed 30/30 with 165 gr plain base bullet. Lot of gas check data with 15 grs 4759 1600 + fps.   Seems too fast for plain base .30. Thinking about 12 grs. Matterns book has a 12 G load at 1350

Any advise ?

Boats, I doubt that using the traditional loads for a .32-40 and that bullet would cause any trouble. Might even be just 'bout what you seek.

Boats, in my 30-30 with 170 grain bullets I found 14 grains of H4227 or 16 grains of H4198 (1432 fps) to shoot near MOA 10 shot groups at 200 using Federal LP Match primers.

Thanks all think I will load up Unique 4227 & 4759. Have to fire form cases & get some basic sight settings for a 1955 24 inch Marlin 336 not micro grove. See what velocity and case expansion each produces.

Want to run it on cast. Ideal would be neck size only and still cycle.

boats,
You probably know that on that first fireforming you want
'the bullets seated out to a Snug crush fit into the throat
to get the best headspacing more on the shoulder.

Boats, those loads were for my '94 and the brass has only ever been neck sized.

15 grs 4227 should be perfect. I like to load plain base with a tiny dab of BP lube holding a .310 card wad in place just protect the base during lift-off.

Not telling you guys anything you don’t already know but for the new cast shooters.

Factory dies oversize brass. Appropriate for dozen hunting loads per year, function cold wet dirty important. Neck sizing much easier on the brass and lets you tailor fit to your bullet.

90% of my shooting is with fixed 38/55 and 32/40 in a CPA formed from the original lot of 500 38/55 WW brass. Lost count of how many times the brass has been loaded, its a lot . Still running fine. Only neck sized. On target very near breech seating performance.

Levers bit different have to cycle & stand up to the Magazine spring. One Unexpected issue is several lots of brass, optional neck size bushing often different one to another. Be better to run all same lot. 30/30 easy to do. 25/20 take what you can get. In my experience 32/20 to 25/20 difficult forming job. Looks easy its not.

A case full of Trail Boss or the measured equivalent should be close to what you're trying to achieve.

Trail Boss is a viable option. Problem is don’t have any on hand. Gun shop I use, Green Top Ashland VA, is Almost WalMart size. Guns and supplies considered essential by Virginia. Limited to 10 customers at a time. Lines are something to see. Wait hours they could be out of Trailboss when you get in the door.

Boats, Ive got a 32 special in a 1936 Marlin and it likes 10 grains of Unique  with a 165 grain  FN. And for a little more Omph, 25 grains of Accurate 2495. Both shoot 1.5 t0 2 inch at 100 and not much different at 200.

I use a 308403 clone Pope mould or a seaco 315 Pb clone.
Or 308241 ideal Pb
Dip lubed in 50/50 bess wax/vas as cast.
50/50 ww/ Pb. Or softer.
@4.5 grns bulleye with a small pea of Dacron if needed.
When the groups start to open up again or it cracks I back off a bit.

Seated out to engrave lands or throat.
Light tension in case neck of partially necked size cases.

Works for me.
To 300 metres
I think the max is 8 grns but you would have to check that out.
1.1-2" at 100 yards. Hand span at 300 on a good day if I can close my eyes ,shake and jerk the trigger in co-ordination  with the Jumping around pesky target.
