Powder selection-357 Maximum

Using a heavy liner I made a 28" 357 Maximum barrel for my sporterized High Wall and like it a lot.  My initial loads have all followed convention, using pistol powders like 2400, 4227, 1680 and H110 and pistol bullets (including Hornady FTX).  I have gotten some pretty good results, but it made me curious - why does all of the load data for this large straight-walled cartridge use these powders and bullets?

Any of you have experience with this cartridge using rifle bullets like Barnes 180 grain .358 TSX (sized to .357) and rifle powders?  If not different bullets, any experience with slower rifle powders?

Thanks.

My friend had good accuracy with the RCBS  200 FP bullet
over 680 powder.  I guess now 1680 in his 10" barrel
Wichita International Pistol.
A couple days ago
"mdeland"(Mike DeLand), over on the Shiloh Forum has
mentioned he has Very good accuracy with the RCBS 35- 200FP
in his 357 Mag and in his 357 Maxi Martini Cadets.
You could ask him what his load is.
I have been shooting the Lyman 358318 , 200grRN last gas check bullet in my own 357Mag Cadet rifle. It shoots very well, too. I am about to load up some of the RCBS 200FP for it soon.
For full power loads, I think the list of powders you have
mentioned are the ones to give you the performance you want, including the heavier bullets. Check the loading manuals.
If you want to load to Lower velocities you might try
slower rifle powders like maybe 4198. I would just load with Unique.

I got my best results with a 180 grain bullet in a 12" Contender barrel using Lil'Gun.  Have to admit I never tried anything slower, and I soon lost interest in the Contender anyway.

This guy seems to like Lil' Gun (and H110 if you go down to the additional loads.) (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

In fact, I forget about it: I will plan to try Lil Gun in my 357
It seems just a tad slower than 1680or H110 when I worked up great loads with it in my 300 Black Out rifle.

I don't have the data anymore but with 250 grain cast bullets in a 1 in 14 twist gun I had very good results with Reloader 7.

Alliant 300-MP.

Burns cooler than 110/296, top end velocities at lower pressures.

Having used 300MP exclusively since it first came out. AA4100 / Ramshot has been by far the better choice for small capacity cases. This based on the experiences of those in our group who have spent allot of time and effort working with them both. I might add I don't shoot any of the small capacity cases and possibly why the 300MP has worked out so well for me. It seems to like the cases with allot of air space.
