Two 40 cal loads wanted

Print Post
I need good starting loads with  readily available powders for a Rem #3 in . 40-50 SS and for a Rem#1 in .40- 70Rem (SBN) .

I do have about 2# of 4759, but would prefer a smokeless fresh off the shelf.

Thanks,

I'm using 23g of AA2015 with adequate accuracy with a 360g bullet.

Alan,
I would think a load of 19.5-20 grains of IMR4227 and a 300-330 grain bullet would be a good load for the .40-50. The loads will be nearly the same for the .40-70. I would use rifle primers in the Hepburn. The bullets will need to be .410"- .412" for factory Remington .40 cal barrels. You could shoot heavier bullets but there is no reason to since the 300 grainers shoot so well at 200 yards. The heavier bullets would just add to the recoil and lessen the fun. I have shot these loads breech seated in several .40 Hepburns I have owned. I didn't find much difference in the load used for .40-50 than for .40-70.

This is my .40-70sbn load. It seems to work when I do my part.

22 grains of H108 worked extremely well for me. I have found 300MP to be the closest to it load for load over time. But as you know you have to be very careful when using something that is new to you.

I think it would be nice if people suggesting loads would specify if they are shooting fixed or breech seated;-)

I personally was shooting breech seated and I apologize for not stating so.

Great target, nice to see someone doing it the traditional way with the correct powder.

Need to spend a bit more time at the range with my Remington Hepburn in .40-50SS testing loads, but IMR4198 with a 300 grain RCBS CSA bullet is looking promising so far ...

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...
