How can you tell a 25-20 single shot from a 25-20 wcf ?

- Hopefully, the barrel will be marked.
- After that, a chamber cast with the low melting point alloy from Rotometals or Brownells or wherever works great. Just did two (2) on my Stevens barrels in about 5min. Can't be much easier with the barrel removed from the action.
- The rim diameter for the 25-20WCF is 0.408" and 25-20SS is 0.378". Since it is so easy to remove/replace the barrel on a Model 44 is simple enough to do - pull the barrel for an accurate measurement or chamber cast.

Am not sure if they were ever chambered in 25-20SS, but one of our resident Stevens experts (not me - I just shoot them Wink) will have to come along and answer that question.

However, being one or the other would not hold me back if I wanted a Model 44 in 25-20. Not enough difference between the performance of the WCF & SS to worry about.

I don't think they were ever chambered in 25WCF.

Yes, finding good and reasonably priced brass for the SS is a problem. If there is any question of the chambering, a WCF will not come close to going into an SS. If you are asking the question online ask them to try to chamber a WCF. It might be better to just look for a Winchester Low Wall. That said, I have a 44 in SS and I love it! Oh, I load the SS in WCF dies (only needs neck sizing) and just use a #10 shellholder (as for .223).

My experience says if it is a Stevens barrel marked 25-20 in factory script, it is a 25-20 SS.  I have both, and even with the brass problems, I'd take the SS any day.

This has been kicked around before. Stevens used the .25-20 SS for sure. There is some doubt that they ever chambered the .25-20 WCF but some claimed to have them. Chamber cast is the positive way to determine what it is.

25-20WCF or 25-20SS........ does anyone know the twist-rate of the factory barrel for the 25cal cartridge?

Stevens would chamber about any popular cartridge .38 or smaller. I have had reported a couple of Stevens Popes in 25-20 WCF
