Lube sizer die question
Apr 27th, 2020 at 6:20pm
Print Post
I am puzzled by the number of lubes holes for Lyman/RCBS lubri-sizer's.
Some have 1 hole others 2, 3 or four. Dies for long BPCR bullets with 4-5 grooves can be found with one hole or 2 when more would seem to make sense? I have had to drill additional holes in some of mine but not others. Some of my dies are 40 yrs old and had numerous holes, the newer ones less......what gives?  I need to buy a .410 die and they seem to have only 2...so more drilling?

I have the same question. Some dies I have to run the bullet twice, turning it 90 degrees to get it to fill the grooves.

It's simple - production costs are reduced by drilling only 2 holes instead of 4.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

One hole per lube groove.

Pan lube then size if needed.  I haven't applied lube with my 3 lubrisizers since I became a 'panner'.  Goes along with being a dipper banger and a bag squeezer.

Lyman/RCBS/SAECO type lubricators depend on pressure pushing the lube into the grooves as they pass the holes. Run it too fast or without enough pressure to make the lube flow and you get partial fill.

Lube softness may also affect how well it flows and fills. Thus heaters for lumber/sizers.

Too many holes in the die body can make a mess with lube oozing out everywhere and too few do not fill the grooves in one stroke. When you do find the right combo of holes to bullet choice, it works nicely. Never needed a press heater for BPCR lube.

i use the lyman tool with rcbs and lyman dies, 2 and 4 holes
my 30 cal is set up for a lyman heater with hard lube. i like to turn the bullet 180 degrees so the lube is evenly packed all around. that way there is no missed spots on the bullet and the top punch makes the same mark on the bullet nose all around.
i did not realize how much lube weighs until i weighed some bullets where the rings were not filled completely. i am still learning.

Been alot of great replies, but no one has really addressed my original question about the number of holes and the "why". If Lyman/RCBS is selling say a .458 lube die, you have to expect its going to used on a long lead bullet, so why make a 1 or 2 hole die when a 4 hole makes more sense on a 4 groove bullet?

you are not getting the essense of my question. Both of my posts indicated the frequent need for more holes for 4-5 groove bullets, never had the need to plug holes but have had to drill additional ones.
