25-20WCF Loads
Apr 27th, 2020 at 10:21am
Print Post
Anyone shooting their 25-20WCF with cast lead bullets and have load info they would like to share? I've got a 22" barrel with the standard 14" twist so likely won't do well with any bullet heavier than 100gr, or so.
I've got IMR4198, 4227, H110 & 5744 powder to try. Win SR primers. Have a selection of 60, 75 & 86gr cast bullets to start with, but will eventually purchase a mold or two.
Also, want to stay below ~1500fps.
Thanks for any info.

In my 92 Win. with an LBT 90gr plain base, using my black powder lube, I use 9 grs of 5744 for 1425 ish fps. This load also works well with the Lyman 65gr. gc.

With the 65gr. gc. I also use 3.4grs. of AA#2 for 1150ish fps.

At one point 30 odd years ago I had several pounds of IMR 4320. A case full to the base of the bullet shot well with the LBT 90gr. and gave black powder velocity. It shot well enough that I won many NRA Lever Action Silhouett matches.

Jeff, did the primer choice make a difference in the above IMR-4320 load?

In general, I have found the right primers can have good effect in these little cases like the 25-20 and Hornet.

In those days I was poor as a church mouse and couldn't afford to test endless varieties. So I used one primer, ran a few powder charges with what ever powder I had on hand. Thats why I used 4320, it's all I had. I used CCI sml. rfl. because it was also all I had. I always guessed that I just got lucky with that load combination.

I have a Savage Model 23 bolt action and it shoots the 75 grain LFN/GC from the Bull Shop in consistent 1-1 1/2" groups at 100 yards with 9 grains of 2400.  I recently got some coated 75 grain RN/FP-GC from Quality Bullets, but have not gotten to the range yet to try them out.

I love the 25-20 WCF.

I once bought a 25-20 Savage 23 just so I could swipe the magazine for my 32-20 model 23. Did yours come with a magazine?  Roll Eyes

oneatatime,

Yep, I have a 32-20 and 25-20, and both have original cheese grater magazines.  Both have really good bores, but the 25-20 is way more accurate - a couple of jacketed bullets go into sub-MOA groups.  Lucky me.

Well......... not getting too much load data, so have started with 7.2gr of H110 and a 75gr GC bullet loaded to 1.60" length. Gotta start somewhere.

Gave my Savage Model 23 to my brother. I'm guessing he still has it as he almost never sells a gun. And, seem to remember that it had two (2) magazines.

Glenn

I am sitting on the fence. 6.5 4227 or 4.8 Unique.  85 gr PB cast. Side by side test tomorrow 40 shot match conditions on painted cardboard, actual critter size & distance. Half one load half the other.

Bench one thing how the rifle is handled less than case full Offhand often another. Trajectory factor as well. Go too,
fast difficult zeroing chickens center hold. Sight bottoms out.

Be interested in your H110 load. 4227 6.5 unburned powder in the bore which seems to have no effect on performance.  Heavier charge may be too fast for my plain base bullet & shoots over the top of chickens. Your GC bullet probably the best solution.

Let you know

Glenn,  I got under half inch groups at 50  yards
with my Hoch 25-20WCF :
Rem FF cases neck sized only
and expanded with Lyman M die.
Load ccisr primer/7.5 and 8 grains of IMR 4227/
1/4"foam wad pushed down while seating Meister 85 gr PBFN bullet.
About same small groups with the 7.5 and 8 gr load.
No pressure signs
