40-82 Crossno-silhouette pet loads

Hello
Shooting a 32 in. Ballard in 40-82 silhouette
I sure would like to hear whats works for you in this caliber, especially with a 14 1/2" twist. All my recent experimenting has not cracked the accuracy code. Am currently shooting a 420 gr. Creedmore and have a 420 gr. money (reduced frt. bands) mold on order. Have had vertical stringing issues. Using old E 1 1/2, diff. wads, match primers R & P. 30:1 and 16:1 alloy. Best "group" is 66 1/2 gr at around 4 in at 200 Yd. I have 3 other 40's with slower twists, and this one is being stubborn.
thanks

You may need more powder and compression. I shoot 70 gr. of 1.5 Fg Swiss in a 40-65 with a 429 gr bullet. Twist is 14.5 and compression is about 0.325 or more. Bullets are slip fit in the case and the block cams the bullet into the rifling, so to speak.

are you able to cam some with the Hepburn? The ballard offers minimal-but maybe enough, so i will try your method and more compression.

Sorry, I was referring to my other rifles which are 40--5.. When I was shooting my Hepburn in 45-70, basically the same load but a 560 gr bullet, I as using a caming stick to can the rounds in. The top of my block is also beveled a bit but I needed more caming than this would provide.

The OP might want to ask on the Shiloh Sharps forum. There are likely more BP shooters with the larger 40cal cartridges over there. Same with using Olde Eynsford power, though most folks use Swiss, do recall a fairly recent thread on Olde Eynsford.
Do know that Swiss seems to like very little or lots of compression (lots being defined as greater than 0.250") should you wish to give it a try. Most folks use 1 1/2F Swiss in their larger cartridges, like the 40-82.

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

Interesting that you find little neck tension works, that is one thing I have not tried, my loads have been neck sized and have .002 tension. Going to try slip fit in the fired cases and see what happens.... may make up an expander plug at .408". 3 in groups is where I want to be.
thanks
