Good point, Bob. The bullet aligns itself in the bore. All it needs is something to push it.

I've used a marked wood dowel when I didn't have a seater or a proper plugged case.

I use a stirrup style seater for my Ballard when I cant push seat them.  It gives lots of leverage.  here it is padded to not scratch my scope with a variety of plug style cases.  the rounded end of the arm fits a ball-shaped indentation in the case to try and compensate for the change in angles.

Low Walls are problematic with their lack of a good mortice to hook on to.  I made the lever seater to hinge off of a tang sight base for my 25-20 Win.

What does the stirrup seater push off of Jack?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It hooks on the back of the breech block opening in the receiver, and straddles the hammer. Then you simply push the "shovel handle" forward to seat bullets. They work great, and have a lot of leverage.

I did not think that brass cylinder at the bottom would allow that it to work that way.

Bob
The photo does not show the ‘claw’ part very well. I will post a better picture later today.

Thanks Jack, that should grab a Ballard really well.

i enjoyed these posts and just had to tell about my plugged case. on one of my first visits to Modesto i had a hi wall and no way to seat the bullet. some guy with a ponytail gave me an adjustable plugged case for a 32-40. worked like a charm except i had to tap it in. tap, tap, tap. i still have that little gem.
i think the guys name was john louis Smiley Smiley Smiley

Here is a stirrup seater in position on a Ballard (Cody). It has plenty of mechanical advantage.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Now there is an offhand Ballard for you Joe.  Think you could get it high enough up in the air at Spokane?  For 20 shots?

Is there an actual rifle in there amidst all that hardware?
