To continue, the point of the sliding mount is that on the recoil of the rifle the scope is free to slide (actually to stay more or less where it started relative to the shooter's eye) instead of giving the shooter a whack in the face. You'll quickly get the idea when you touch off a heavy 45-70 bullet in that light rifle. If the scope is locked into its mounts it will be headed your way fast.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this , much appreciated

I remember when those were first offered for sale in both the 17.5" and 30" lengths. I saw them with the big clunky mounts that set the scope off to one side, and had crude adjustments. Never saw any with the mounts shown above?
I have two of the longer versions and replaced mounts on both with higher quality mounts. One is in an old pair of Winchester A5 mounts, and the other in Malcolm style long range mounts. Both of mine have been rebuilt and crosshairs and lenses replaced to better quality. I like them, and they have a very clear view now with the upgrades. One is also more power than the other, so I'm guessing when the lenses were replaced it got higher power lenses?
I darkened both of mine with Birchwood Casey's Brass Black as i hated the shiny brass finish. Much improved their appearance.

Ok guys, finally got the actual scope, had some delays waiting for handgun transfers so the auction house could ship everything together. I must say I am very please with the condition, the mount rings are rough cast I was hoping they would be the better ones but lenses are great and recticles are sharp and clear. I have a Navy Arms 45-70 Rolling block I bought at a US auction a few weeks ago , it's not here yet but I think this scope would look cool on that gun and hopefully work as well. See actual pics attached.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Those mounts are better than the big clunky mounts. But they appear to have very little adjustment for elevation, so not sure how far you'll be able to shoot using those rings? If you come across a pair of rings with larger diameter rings I'd buy them. I swapped both of mine to larger rings, and it makes them much more versatile!

Finally got this scope mounted on a rifle 1873 Remington Rolling Block 45-70 (Navy Arms/Pedersoli repro). Had my gunsmith mill a custom set of blocks - now to see if she shoot as pretty as she looks. I had the 'smith also install a new firing pin and extractor.

Finally got this combo out to the range today - sunny and -4degC.

I had a local gunsmith fabricate brass mounts for the scope however it appears at least the rear mount is not sufficiently off-set. At 50 yards with the scope set all the way to the right in the rear mount she still shoots 7" left from point of aim. See pic attached. Will see if we can modify the offset for the rear block or alternatively get a set of HiLux mounts.

How much play is there (if any) between the scope rings and the bases he made? If there's much play, you might be able to shim to one side to get it on target.
Amazing that even with the limited adjustment the rear has that it wouldn't be enough to get you centered at just 50 yds.? I'd think you could look down from the top and see the scope canted off to one side if it was that far off?

The clamping screw on the rear mount might allow me to add a shim on the right side to shift the which should shift the mount/ring to right. I'm attaching some close up pics in case you might have another suggestion.

Thanks Roger

What would happen if you turned the front ring around 180 degrees? Or the rear ring even?

I have one of those scopes and had the same problem. Turns out the cross hairs were offset.

Turning the scope 90 degrees corrected the horizontal, then set the offset to maximize vertical adjustment.

Thanks for the suggestion, I may give that a try.

Thanks for the info, I will give this a try next time I am at the range.

If you have a boresighter, it will answer the question for you.  You can accomplish the same by mounting rifle in a vice, and aiming at a fixed point, and then making the change. at least would save a trip to the range. Not that going to the range is a bad thing.
