Powder Measures and Powder tins
Apr 15th, 2020 at 7:05pm
Print Post
We have seen some amazing collections go to auction over the last 2 to 3 years. Where are all the reloading tools?

I usually only buy reloading tools (and brass) in the calibers of my rifles unless something is rare. Here is a partial view of my "stuff" ...

The powder measures (left to right) are ...
Lyman No.5   ,   Lyman No.6 Duplex   ,   Milwaukee Duplex   ,   J.D. Wilkinson (x2)   ,   H.M. Pope Duplex

Nice collection Joe! That funnel on the Wilkinson is probably tougher to find than the Wilkinson measure is! Wish I could find one for mine!

Thanks Vall ... that funnel is a reproduction and a gift from a friend.

Approx. 5 years ago an original funnel was listed on eBay. I kept the photos but never bid on the funnel because I didn't really know enough about that powder measure ... so dumb !

Thanks Rodney! I'd love to get one! I've never seen them for sale at Denver? Does he only bring them if someone orders one to bring there?

Nice collection, Joe. Thanks for showing it to us. Here's another we don't see for sale often..
Those black things, an inch in diameter, are grains of powder. They filled three bags with 110 pounds per sack, per load. But, they breech seated for best accuracy.

I've got a few old powder tins, a Lyman #5 powder measure, and a couple of boxes full of shotgun crimpers and hand tools and Winchester reloading tong tools and moulds.  Not nearly enough though, and I really don't have anywhere to display them properly!

Joe, that's a very nice display. You've given me an idea for another project in the the reloading room. You & Fitz asked where all the reloading tools went.....well at least some of them ended out here in Oz. Here's part of a display of WRA Co. tools & moulds that belong to a friend of mine. We put on a Winchester display each year at one of our local gunshows. I do the SS rifles and he does the Levers & reloading tools. He has some truly amazing stuff with many still in their original boxes. All located locally back in the 60's & 70's when this kind stuff was around & nobody was really interested in old loading tools.

I started out many decades ago collecting the Browning designed 1881 Marlin reloading tools. Then discovered the Ideal tools from the period that Marlin owned Ideal, and collected Ideal tools marked with the Marlin Firearms Co. rollstamp. After my interest in single shots developed I began seeking out other tools related to single shot era, and especially those unique to single shot shooting. Along the way I accumulated powder measures, powder tins, breech seating tools, false muzzles and starters, and some other oddball stuff. Plus a bunch of old ammo, brass, and bullet boxes that range from full to just empty boxes. And some tins of old primers.
I never considered it collecting until one day a friend looked at it all and told me it was a collection. Smiley Most of it is in drawers, cases, or storage bins. The powder tins are about the only thing displayed and they sit on top of one of my safes.

Wow  !!! Some really nice collections here. Lot's of neat stuff. Since we all have lots of time on our hands, here are some shots of my reloading / man room. Really like the old cartridge boxes and old shotshell machines and tools. Anything old related to the shooting sports.  I hope the pictures are somewhat clear. My eye sight ain't worth a damn.  Dale.

Yes, that's where I reload. Here's a pic of my bench. Nothing fancy. But it works for me. And yes, I do have OCD. A place for everything, and everything in it's place. Have always been like that. You ought to see my garage. What can I say.  Dale.

I'm enjoying this thread immensely, perhaps even more than looking at the guns; you so very seldom see any of this stuff in any quantity.

Thanks Vall. Back when I started collecting antique reloading tools, it was easier to find the shotshell tools. The one is a B.G.I.Co. "Rapid" Machine Loader and the one with the brass hoppers is a "Hunters Safe & Rapid Cartridge Loading Machine". Made by the Geo, D. Hunter Co. of Chicago.  Dale.

After I referred to them as duplex measures I wondered if they might be shotshell measures for powder and shot. Still pretty cool, and not seen often these days!

Well, now I know why it's hard to find old reloading stuff! Thanks for sharing your collections, it's great to see it all being kept so well. It's  funny to see my German bayonet lurking in the background!

Rodney going back to your post #16 and the bottom row to the right. Is that a Pope mould with the automatic sprue cut off feature. Could you also please provide any background that you might have on it.

It is one of the copies that McLemore made back in the eighties serial #51. It came with  33 cal and a 32 caliber mold. I have since made several more 35cal, 40cal and 45 cal inserts.  Tom Rowe wants to someone to make copies, because they are the best working molds made for speed and quality. I think it could be a pretty good job but as I have one of those, I will stay with what I do. Saying that I would build molds and make castings if some one wanted to tackle it!

Thank you Rodney a few years back I would have jumped on your offer to make some castings. Unfortunately my mould making days are just about over but hopefully someone will take up your offer they should sell extremely well.

I'd like to thank both Joe and Rodney for bringing this thread back to life earlier this year. I have been looking for a funnel for my Wilkinson measure for some time. Rodney posted Mr. Holters name and phone so I contacted him a few weeks ago. Great gentleman to visit with and just retired as a federal judge last year at 92. He had one reproduction funnel left and he decided to make a few more and he mailed me a new funnel and the drop tube. I'm very pleased to be able to complete my Wilkinson measure! I doubt I would ever find an original and this will work fine.
Also as a side note, I was looking at Tom Rowe and Ed Curtis books on reloading tools and noticed he referred to the Wilkinson measure as the Wilkerson measure! Someone proofreading made a slight goof!
Thanks guys!
