Did it again (yes, again) ... Remington Hepburn

Thank goodness that Canada Post is still working!  Today they brought me a bit of a self-isolation reprieve and delivered the Remington Hepburn in .45-70 Govt that I bought recently.

It's an early 3 digit serial number gun (526) and although it has a lot of honestly earned patina (not rusty and crusty, just well enjoyed) it still has a good shooter bore.  The tang sight is a reproduction of course and someone has added an extra dovetail slot to the barrel, but I'm still enamored with the old girl at first glance.

(Sigh ... another project gun to go along with all of the OTHER project guns ...)

Well Rev, You don't surprise me anymore with your new "project" guns. That's a neat old Hepburn in a great caliber.  Enjoy.  Dale.

wowww! Now that's a nice find. And hardly a project at all in 45-70, a little conservation clean-up and you should be ready to shoot in no time.

Congratulations.

I love Hepburns! Just such a well built single shot, with a unique appearance. That looks like a well loved gun, and even though it might not be minty, it appears to have been well cared for, and not abused.
You'll likely want to replace the cheap Italian tang sight soon as the windage adjustment is pitiful! It cants the staff, so the higher you raise it, the more you move away from center.

I like old guns that show honest age and normal wear and tear ... that have been used, but not abused.  I'd be scared to damage a perfect example of an original rifle so prefer them not to be perfect to begin with, but that is just me and I am a "shooting" collector rather than someone that collects "safe queens".  Each to their own ...

Yes, I've used these Italian tang sights before and that pivoting windage setup is just awful to work with and it can be frustrating trying to get a rifle zeroed with this type of sight.  (Just a little bit of Italian revenge I guess ... they must really hold a grudge!  LOL)  If it shoots anywhere near the existing sight setting then I'll shoot it "as is" until I can replace it with a better tang sight with proper windage adjustments.

RevAl, nice Hepburn. I have its older sister #440 also in .45/70 but with a 28" oct/round barrel. Mine is not drilled & tapped for a tang sight and I was wondering if you think yours was the same until that repo sight was added. I must admit that I wish it was fitted with screw holes for a tang sight as I just cannot use the early Rem rear  barrel sight with its tiny notch (old eyes). Have resisted the urge to add a tang sight (have a lovely Axtel short range vernier just sitting here) as the rifle is in about +90 % condition. As a result it remains unfired Cry

Sadly there comes a time in a shooter's life that one must choose the path of a collector or to continue to be a shooter. Nice rifle and one that beg's to be shot. Your responsibility is too the rifle, the museums are full of better examples.

Very nice old Hepburn! A man can't have too many Hepburns, but I'd like to try.

I wondered the same thing! Mainly because it appears the tang sight spacing looks closer than the Remington 1.937" used on their rifles.
Have you measured the hole spacing yet, and is it 1.937" factory, or something like 1.5"??

I'll have to measure it and see.  I'm still hobbling around the house on crutches (bad case of Sciatica right now) and my better half took the rifle down to my gun shop / reloading shop for me which is down 2 sets of stairs that I still can't navigate yet.  Sigh ...

Based on the distance from the rear tang sight screw to the stock screw I'm pretty sure it's not regular Rem. spacing, and likely Stevens 1.5" spacing.

Being Italian, do you know the hole spacing on the Italian reproduction Rolling Blocks or Sharps?  Was likely a tang sight for one of those rifles?

They are either longer Sharps spacing, or shorter 1.5" Stevens spacing. It's not the longer Sharps, so probably 1.5"
Really not a big deal as I'd rather have the 1.5" spacing than have no holes for a tang sight. All my Hepburns have factory holes for tang sight, but have several Rolling Blocks not D&T for tang sights, and I wish they were. Just don;t want to alter them.
