Stevens 44 serial and barrel weight number (Read 2601 times)

	To Stevens fans, I have a Stevens 44 in 51 trim. The rifle has a #4 barrel. The number stamped under the barrel starts with a 4, then a space, then a three digit number. The rifle is registered with all numbers as the serial number. I wonder if the 4 refers to the barrel weight and the trailing three numbers are the real serial number. Does anybody know? Thanks in advance.

	The 4 should be right ahead of where the for-end stops, the three digits would be the serial number if they're on the lower tang I would think. Anything on the tang behind the lever? If the rifle has the seven o' clock extractor and a three digit serial it would probably be a pretty early one.Pictures would be very nice!
