Can IMR 8208 be used in reduced amounts to reload some of the old black powder ammo? Like 2400, 3031, Unique? 45/70? 32/20? 32long colt? Thanks. Richard.

Richard,
There's some load data published for this powder in 45-70's I don't recall where I found it.  I spent part of a season trying to make it work in a 40-82 I built.  It did ok with most of the loads, but nothing spectacular.  On a whim I tried 5744 going up and down the load recommendations- this ran circles around the 8208 performance - and if I burn smokeless it's still my go-to powder for the larger cases - best performance is generally at the lower end of the charge recommendation.  I'm experimenting with Shooter's World - Buffalo Rifle as it's half the price of 5744, but I'm not seeing what I hoped for...  more to try though.

GT, I too have tried Buffalo Rifle in a 40-70 SS.  Accuracy with 27.0 gr and a 400 grain bullet have been good but lots of unburned powder in the bore.  What has been your outcome with Buffalo Rifle?  Tom

Tom,
Of the eight pounds I bought, I've had a chance to burn about 200 grains of it in a 45-70 - not even enough to begin an opinion.  I've had real limited time for the range the past month or so - that has to change  Sad self quarantine is one thing, no range time is a whole 'nother animal!  Angry
hoping for some this weekend and maybe do a little write-up?

Thanks one and all. I should have checked with IMR. Sometimes I holler out before I am hurt. I do have quite a bit of 8208, and not currently using it like I had been. Thanks. Richard.

Re the above:
Well, that did not work so well.
Anyways the Hodgdons Reloading data website
has 8208 loads for the 40-65, light. to get into
the 1400-1500fps with 400 gr bullet.
