38-55 reloading

What's a good smokeless powder to use for 38-55?
I have about 5 lbs of 4227 hanging around, but I imagine that's too fast. I have 500, 245gr. hard cast bullets.

4227 was an excellent for me. 16-18 grs. with a 240 gr. bullet will put you right in the BP pressure and velocity area.

What rifle are you shooting it in?

I've had good results with 4227, currently working up loads with 4198 and a 329 gr bullet in my Ballard.

Last visit to the range before the lock down I started seeing 1/2 inch groups with 20.5 grains.Burns a bit cleaner than the 4227 so far.

This was all done with the bullet breech seated .060" ahead of the case mouth and a single cork wad at the mouth.I have a lot of bullets cast up and lubed and cases prepped for when I can get back down there....It's driving me crazy knowing that I'm "this close" to finding the sweet spot.

I've had good results with 10.0 grains Unique with fixed loads.  Practical accuracy, certainly "old school". Smiley

Elsewhere on this forum, you will find a shooter using a rifle chambered in .38-55. The powder is 300MP. An impressive 200-yard target is shown. IIRC it was 16-17 grains.
