Otto A. Bremer information needed
Mar 15th, 2020 at 4:28pm
Print Post
I'm looking for any information (bio?) on O.A.Bremer.  He was a custom gunsmith (specializing on customizing Schuetzen rifles) in San Francisco around and before the 1900's.  He patented a double set trigger system on Feb. 24, 1891.  That's about all I know.
Hopefully, someone can shed more light on this man.

I can tell you a little about O. A. Bremer; he was part of a group of gunsmiths in the bay area, his gunshop was in San Francisco, but he lived in Alameda. Bremer's business was usually converting hunting rifles, particularly hiwall Winchesters, to schuetzen rifles. So, a shooter could bring his rifle to Mr. Bremer, and he would install his pat. double-set triggers, and make a custom offhand stock to fit, as well as sights and a palmrest, and voila, you were ready. Bremer sold various shooting products as well as his own buttplate castings and lots of other stuff.

I believe he also made some of the measuring devices for measuring the closest to center shots on the stitch targets

In the ASSRA News Vol 48 Issue 2 Page 3 there is an article on a Bremmer Winchester single set trigger. If you don't have the old news an e-mail to the archives can get you a photo copy.

Thanks to all for your help. I could only find a few references on him.

At the most recent gun show in Sparks, NV I picked up a Winchester 1885 in 38/55, PG, with  factory vernier tang and windage front sights, 32" bbl, 1/2 Oct, no rear sight provision and matting the full length of the barrel.   It has Bremer's DST triggers on it (even stamped a patent date next to them) and possibly his stocks.

Last year a friend of mine who lives north of San Francisco found a OA Bremer Ballard schuetzen rifle in a local gun shop. It appeared to have been left uncared for for decades, but cleaned up to be a lovely old schuetzen rifle.
I almost never see Bremer rifles for sale, but those I've seen are always extremely well done.

Val, about 20 years ago, Mike Petrov sent me a photo of a Ballard he had owned that had Bremer triggers. I've only seen the Winchesters. This nice little rifle is marked "A. Browning & O. A. Bremer - San Francisco."

My friend posts here occasionally so he might see this and respond with details later. But here's a picture of the Ballard before it got a gentle cleaning.

Hello! I am doing genealogy research on my paternal bloodline. Otto Bremer was the father-in-law of my great-granduncle, Adolph Johnson, who ran O.A.Bremer Co. with him in San Francisco from 1923-1928. I've attached an advert from the store from 1925, and I've attached a copy of Otto Bremer's 1921 patent.

Apparently Otto Bremer was quite a marksman as well; Newspapers.com has lots of articles reporting his competition results. I have not delved into those too deeply yet, since I am focused mostly on my bloodline itself, the Johnsons. But hope this helps your exploration.

Let me know if you'd like me to check further for you, or share more.

Good post. Neat information.
My son has a very nice and very unusual Bremer Winchester rifle.

Thank you Pamela. Smiley
