If it were me I'd bid on it but not get caught up in a bidding war for it. If I got it for a reasonable price I'd send it to Ron smith have him poke it out to 33 and rerifle it with Pope profile rifling. Have him put his stamp on it so there was no confusion.

How do you know it has a ringed barrel?

There's the value.

Direct from the description:

"Action is smooth, the bore is excellent besides a shallow dark ring approximately 1" from the muzzle"

And I've seen many guns with a ring anywhere in the length of the barrel. They are not just in the chamber area. If something is lodged in the bore the next shot fired will likely create a ringed barrel wherever the obstruction was.

But you'd shoot the rifle first, wouldn't you, 40 Rod, in order to justify such sacrilege?

I might add, that most rings are near the muzzle, as the shooter neglected to remove his false muzzle.

Would question if the false muzzle would cause a ring, but sure hard on the false muzzle
Most rings caused by "short stroking"
Projectile started down the muzzle, one to six inches, with a starter, not pushed down to the powder and fired.
Will almost certainly ring a barrel. Happens pretty regular if not paying attention. Worth checking if any question.
Some still shoot pretty well afterwards, some not.

I doubt the false muzzle caused any ring.  Mine never did  Roll Eyes

You both are correct. The false muzzle alone might not cause a ring, but as you state, a started bullet and or starter left in place is almost sure to cause a ring.

And as Chuckster stated, the possibility of launching a very valuable false muzzle down range is most certainly not a good thing.

Seems a rung bore didn't seem to hurt all that much? Of course, possibly the buyer?

In today's deflated market, that would be a good price even with a perfect bore. I'm surprised!

I just looked at all 19 pages of that auction. Interesting that all of the long range rifles went for less that their minimum estimated. There were sure lots of nice rifles if you just had the change!

Most old rifles I’ve seen with a ring about an inch or so down the muzzle was caused by a “mud-dabbed” or some other critter building his nest. Ledball

I had a ring about 2 inches back from the muzzle on a Win 62a. It would generally shoot OK but sometimes throw out a real flyer. Cut off the bbl and redid the end.
