40-70 SS Paper Patch round two

After failing miserably with 350 grain paper patched bullets with smokeless I went out today and shot with the holy black.  The rifle is a Hepburn with a modern barrel with .408/.400 barrel.  The patched diameter was .404.  I tried fixed loads of 5 grains of Re7 and the case filled with Swiss 1 1/2 with a single wad and minimal compression so that the bullet was seated by hand about 1/4".  That load was not too good.  The next 5 were breech seated with 5 grains of Re7 and the case filled with 1 1/2 with a single wad to hold the powder in.  That 5 shot group at 50 yards shows me that the bullets are accurate if I find the right combination.  I had to clean after each shot or I could not push the next bullet in as I was just using a plugged case and thumb pressure.  Next time out I will use a grease cookie as RSW had suggested to me.  I was using Hornady 405 Winchester brass full length as the chamber is longer than the standard 40 2.5 like the barrel is marked.  Let me tell you that the crescent buttplate got my attention with blackpowder loads!  Good thing several suggested to me to cock and fire again as none of the rounds would allow me to open the breech until I did and then the shells would fall out.  Definitely the primers are backing out.  I am going to try some BACO brass with 0.073 thick rims to see if that helps and as my chamber measures .073 rim recess and my Hornady brass is only .068.  My ultimate goal is finding a paper patched hunting load that will allow at least 5 shots without cleaning.  Next step is a grease cookie of SPG and try to come up with a more accurate fixed load as I did not clean between shots when I tried that.  Tom
