40-82 match?

Print Post
a friend of mine just purchased a rifle in this caliber and from what I understand it is basically just at the lengthened 40-65 on a 45-90 case?
I'm just curious where I could get some information for this as I'm going to be the one loading his ammo

I have the Crossno version known as the silhouette, it has a .600" long straight neck also sized from 45-90 brass.

Couple of threads on these cartridges over on the Shiloh Rifle forum. Search in the Shooter-to-Shooter and Black Powder forums.

I think 40-82 Winchester is a different animal

I have both the Win and the Crossno reamers from Manson, and I've made brass for both from 45-90, the difference I recall is I can drop about five more grains of Black in the Win case because of the bottleneck.  The Crossno is straight taper to the neck that's about .600 long while the Win is opened a little more, has a shadow shoulder going to a neck that's about .450 long.  Here's a poor photo of the two reamers side by side.
I don't recall another 40-82 out there but my recollection isn't what it use to be either.
In my opinion, it's splitting fine hairs.  Get the reamer you can easily get dies for, I got Redding dies and they match the Winchester.  If I feel the need to do something to the Crossno brass once it's shot, I can neck size it.  Generally, I just clean  and load it without any other operation and it shoots well.

Steve Rhodes (may he RIP) offered a slightly different 40-82 from the Crossno reamer that was also a straight taper to the neck. If I recall, Dan Theodore (may he also RIP) worked on it with Steve and Dave Manson made the reamers. Again, think it was discussed on the Shiloh forum some years ago when there were several folks giving it a try.

Cbashooter,
I have shot two of the 40-82 variants.  A Winchester 40-82, which is a very slight bottle neck cartridge and the Lonestar 40-82 silhouette, which is the 45-90 brass sized with a 40-65 die, so the bottom 0.3" is not sized.

Let me know what you have and I will send you my loading info [BP only].

Keep on hav'n fun!

It really shines with PP and the BACO Kidwell bullet for greasers.
