Anybody use 4759 in 28-30?

My Stevens barreled Ballard does not seem to like 4227 under an Ideal 120g bullet.  I am looking for a starting load for SR4759 under the same bullet or a Hoch 135g bullet.  I also have NHR's adjustable 285221 mold so I could make different weight bullets if I choose to use that old mold. Twist is 1 in 14.  I don't have any load data for 4759.  Like to keep it sub sonic.

Answering because nobody else has responded, don’t have direct knowledge on 28/30 but here goes.

Old rule of thumb was 4227 32/40 & smaller cases 4759 40 and up. 38/55 can use either.

I use 4227 with good results in 25/20. Lever Silhouette shooters it’s the most popular.  32/40 it’s the only powder I use.

Switched my 38/55 to 4227 when 4759 was discontinued . Like the better measuring qualities.  Other day looked at my powder supply and found 4 bottles. Loaded up 60 38/55 with 4759 weighing each. And 60 38/55 with 4227 also weighed.  Powder charge by weight exactly the same 17 grs. Same 245 gr bullet same lot of brass & primers.   Can’t compare volume thrown, Belding and Mull measure 4759 Harrell’s 4227.

Side observation throwing every charge either powder from the measure into scale pan check weighing. You need to weigh 4227 too. 4759 off weight more, some 4227 charges from the Harrell’s measure were off . Good as the Harrell’s is, you can short stroke one.

At the range this week 200 yard offhand practice found my sight settings were exactly the same with either powder . Can’t say how they group, I don’t shoot benchrest. Test that makes a load for me is 60 shots same point of impact. 10 sighters 40 match with 10 left for shoot off’s Observation  other day call vs strike no difference in the two powders.

Opinion few will agree with powder is just a fuel. 4227 & 4759 are so close there is no difference in performance.

Boats,
It is interesting that you mention 4227 and the Harrells. I have several low shots in groups that had me baffled. I would have never thought that 4227 would be inconsistent out of the Harrells, but will now have to go back and do a weight test with as thrown charges. Thanx for that powder comparison.

Found 11.2 to 11.8 gr. of 4759 the best in fixed loads in my Highwall in .28-30 with a 28" Douglas 1:14 twist. Different charges with different bullets.

My opinion Harrell’s makes the best measure. I was getting occasional low strikes using 17 hrs of 4227 thrown not weighed.  A run of match cartridges for me is 3 x 60 round MTM boxes all loaded same time. One box per match

Go fast high volume repeat motion it’s easy to make a mistake. Next time ran the same 3x60 loads throwing exactly 17 grs in the powder scale pan. No dribbling, weighing as thrown. Check weighed each & charged the case with a funnel.  Found several light throws.  Dumped the light throws & threw another, deliberate operation, spot on.

Then made a test run altering the lever operation pace. I could duplicate light drops at will by running the measure too fast.

Any machine can be operated Improperly. Good lesson for me.

Boats, of all the rounds of 32-40 I’ve ever shot, the great majority (maybe 85-90%, if not more) has been with 4759.  I’ve had good results with 4227 in this caliber in a few fixed rounds that came with a rifle I bought, but I don’t recall ever using this powder for breech seating.

Come see us in June for the Chinquapin event and we can compare notes over dinner!  Cool

I used 11.2 to 11.4 gr 4759 in my Stevens 44/47 in .28-30 for years.  If I had enough of it, it would be my go-to powder.  11.2 grains and a 140 gr Hoch worked best.

Glad to have found that stash of 4759. Loading up a box of 38/55 with it now. Shoot the March match with it. Some point will have to go back to 4227, when it runs out.

Froggy I miss the days shooting with you guys at Chinquapin. See if you can recruit some of the old offhand shooters from NC & Tenn. If they shoot I will too.

Sad to say CPA has my Pope stocked, fancy finger lever, hook plate & palm rest Schuetzen now. Restocking it, sporter configuration. It’s set idle for several years, special rifle but no offhand shooting around for the gun. Our club matches don’t allow Schuetzens or breech seating.  I can shoot my other Silhouette stocked CPA with you guys.
