Lead Alloy Calculator

This is a test. I found this calculator somewhere on the internet but I'll be darned if I can find it again. It's worth downloading if you can find it .

Edit: Maybe this post worked. How it works is you put your value in a box, like 10 in lead. Then you put another value in another box, like 2 in linotype. The Brinell number is displayed at the bottom.

Not sure I trust that.  10 to 1 lead tin has a hardness of 11.  Harder than either the lead or the tin.

INdeed, not uncommon for an alloy to have
"better" characteristics than the individual components.

I have 150 lbs. of linotype I recently came into. Can anyone tell me the mixture ratio of linotype with pure lead to get to 20:1 mix?

Do you mean the same hardness as 20 parts lead to 1 tin?

A lead and tin alloy does not contain any antimony nor can it.

Val Linotype is currently at 4.00 a pound and you might be better off to sell it rather than trying to make it work out to being close to 20-1.

Linotype Alloy (4%-Tin, 12%-Antimony, and 84%-Lead)

The .30 cal milsurp shooters would love to have it.

I've got plenty, but if it's now $4 a pound it's the best investment I ever made.

Just to calm the fears, this isn't going to bullets for my old single shots. I just wanted to know how to get close to the same hardness as 20:1 lead/tin mix.

And selling this for a profit would be great, but shipping wont make sense. So I'd have to find locals who wanted this linotype. I'd be tickled with half that $4 a lb. estimate. Or trade it for tin or lead.

Well, according to the spreadsheet I have, you'd have to mix 6 parts pure lead to 1 part linotype to get near the hardness of 20:1 alloy.   It's the antimony that's the problem.

To bad there isn't a Heavy class CBA shooter you know close by he would probably buy it all Val. The price came off the RotoMetals web site 19.99 for five pounds.

I keep walking past the 35 lb. linotype bars stacked in my garage and telling myself they need to be used up. Guess I'll melt some down and try it in my Colt Commercial 1911 .45 or my Model 25 S&W in .45 Colt to see how it does.

For clost to 50 years I have used an alloy that works very well for up to bullseye pistol, magnum pistol , HT for Hi vel Pistol,  for my BPCR
as well as CBA Vin Mil, and Schuetzen:
9+1  COWW/Lino.  BHN 15 or so.
