6.5X65R load information
Jan 15th, 2020 at 4:32pm
Print Post
Is anyone on the forum loading for a 6.5X65R rifle? I just acquired a stalking rifle in this caliber and have very limited info. I am currently trying some loads using charges that are appropriate for the 6.5-06.
Thanks for any information

I suppose you've seen this: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) which references Handloader Issue #179. Also saw a reference that the rimmed version is loaded lighter which may be good as another reference says that performance with RWS ammo exceeds the 264 Win Mag with a larger case so pressures are perhaps exceedingly high. Approach with care.

All data is for jacket bullets-charges are similar for lead bullets ... specific to bullet weight

As a side note this is a modern rifle similar to a TC Encore in design and strength. I have the info from Load Data and have also found information that the single shot version design using the rimmed cartridge is loaded to lower pressures. With the larger case capacity and going with 6.5-06 starting load data I see no signs of excessive pressure and I am considerably below what the previous owner was loading. The rifle has been to Africa several times for plains game and used full power loads. However for woods hunting whitetail I wanted to find a more sedate load. Most shots are under 150 yards and a lighter load would be more pleasant to shoot and less destructive to the meat.
Thanks for all the input.

Joe Smithson, a gunmaker in Provo UT is finishing a 6.5x65 R rifle build for me.  The rifle is built on a Steve Earle Fraser action with a 26” 1:8 twist barrel.  I should note that the throat has been cut about .012” longer than CIP spec.
Initial trials were shot with 130 grain Nosler Accubond bullets seated at COL 3.537”.  Win LR primers.  Max loads (with no signs of pressure or difficulty with extraction) were:
H-4350 49.0 grain, 2,954 fps; IMR 7828 SC 55.0 grain, 3,023 fps: RL22 55.0 grain, 3,089 fps.
Subsequent load tests were done with H-4350 from 49.5 - 52.5 grain and CCI BR primers. RWS cases were neck turned to tune neck thickness to +/- .001” (necks were consistently .001-.002” thicker at the front than near the shoulder).
52.5 grain produced Vm 3,100 fps with no pressure or extraction issues.
3-shot group size varied .305-1.100”, but 18 of 20 shots were within 1”.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. My load development has been on hold with our annual NM spring winds and the county range closing with the covid scare. It's possible it may open 6-1-2020, we locals certainly hope so.I have a supply of bullets and powder just waiting to try in the rifle.

I started loading the 6.5x65R using data for 6.5-06, as this seemed the most compatible common US cartridge.  The 6.5X65R is a little longer case, and with the COL for my rifle optimised for longer bullets the heel of the 130 grain Nosler Accubond is just intruding into the shoulder space.  With a CIP spec throat you might find the hotter 6.5-06 loads just about right for your rifle.
If you are planning to use your 6.5x65R for woodland deer hunting you might consider the heavier 140 and 160 grain Woodleigh bullets as they will take up space in the case and probably provide more consistency with a lighter charge.
I have no personal experience of hunting with either of these bullets, but I have taken a lot of African game with a 7x57 loaded with Woodleigh's 175 grain PP bullets and they were excellent. A 160 grain 6.5 bullet will likely not do a whole lot of damage to a white tail deer.
