40-70 is a good round. Have one in a High wall. I shoot 28 gr IMR 4198 with a RCBS 400 gr bullet in my local "buffalo" match out to 350 yards with normally good results.

Greg, the smokless  shooters love buffalo rifle powder and use the same loading data as 5744. I have tried it in one 40/65 ,21 grains with a 400 grain bullet. Shot good and no signs of pressure.

That's real close to what I use in my 40-65 with 5744 and it does very well out to 600.  Thanks Hiwall55
I have a new to me toy that I still haven't used, I think this may be a place to use it, another post up and coming... Wink

I was hoping by now to have my new MVA sight with Hadley eyepiece but it is still several weeks away so I decided to go shoot up my blackpowder hunting loads so I can start serious load development with 50 empty cases.  I shot this 10 shot group at 50 yards with an apperature front and a Marble's folding tang sight using a 400 grain bullet and a duplex load of Re-7 and Swiss 1.5 powder.  Now I am wondering what I might gain going with smokeless and continue using black!  There were some pretty good winds blowing left to right and maybe the group indicates that as I did not shoot in conditions, just firing as I got set.  Back in the day when I shot 6PPC out of a dedicated bench rest rifle that was the kind of group you would get when not using flags.  Hopefully I can move out to 100 yards when I get a better rear sight to help my old eyes.  Tom

Tom,
I think you're having too much fun.  I just got my 8 pounder of Buffalo Rifle but the 40-70 is nowhere near ready to shoot.  I'm going to try it in a 40-65 maybe even the 40-60 BN.

Nice!
I wish I could still handle recoil from the “bigger” rifles. That looks like a hoot.
