Primer residue

Fired a bunch of primers today in the shop while fiddling with a Ballard. Was amazed at how much soot was in bore, and the brass primer pockets where just as dirty and crusty as a full load.

So now wondering....accuracy aside, are some brands cleaner than others? I have cci, federal match and some win. have never tried Remington.

Today is curiosity  day!

Some may be produce less residue, but I'm not sure the difference will be measurable.

I used to shoot a lot of the old Speer "plastic bullets" indoors. It did leave the pistols quite sooty, and I tried a couple diffrent makes of primers but could see no real difference.

Oh, and one of those plastic .38 wadcutters WILL penetrate cleanly through a roll-up fiberglass garage door. Don't ask me how I know.  Embarrassed

I have popped a variety over the years and they all seemed to be the same. For those who have never done it you would be amazed at how much fouling comes from just one. It's also abrasive and why one should not push it out the muzzle it will bell it over time.

Different brands leave different residue.   Not mentioning brands, I shot maybe 45-50 shots/case not cleaning the pockets, with no problem. Changed to another brand for a season, and be the end of the season, there was enough residue accumulated that pistol primers would not seat fully in rifle cases.
