I saw their brass at the Quigley, its beautiful work! I was interested in some more 40-90 Ballard cases, until the price was revealed. I know it is expensive to make, but will have to live with the 20 RMCC cases I have now.

I'm glad they're making brass, but so far nine I can afford to buy.

I've had great success producing "shooter" brass for my .40-90 Ballard Pacific fire-forming it from 9.3x74R Norma brass, and they are costing me less than $1 per round including the cost of the components I use to fire-form them.  Just sayin' ...

The problem I have with my Pacific Ballard in 40-90 and 9.3X74 Norma brass is the rims... my extractor wouldn't quite pick up the rim of a fired round, even though the unformed, unfired brass would lift out nicely, once the brass had formed to the chamber there was enough resistance that the tip of the extractor just skipped over the rim.  Does anybody have a quick and dirty fix, or will I have to fit another extractor?

I happened to be looking at the reprint of the Sears, Roebuck and Company 1897 catalog and noted that 40-90 brass was $2.26. That's per 100.

That $2.26 scales to about $70 today. That still comes out 70 cents/case vs what the real going price is today.

I've been lucky in that my Pacific will extract the fire-formed 9.3x74R Norma cases as long as I am diligent in pushing the extractor flush to the chamber and making sure that the rim is above the extractor.  I've had to knock the odd fired case out of my rifle with a cleaning rod, but not very often.  Even if I need to knock out the odd fired case it still beats the high cost of buying expensive .40-90 brass!

Charlie my .40-85 Pacific extracts them fine, but chambering I have to be careful not to let the rims slip past the extractor. If I had one with a slightly worn extractor I'd take the extractor out and have the tip built up slightly by tig welding, and then shape it down until it was a close fit the the cartridge. It's cheaper and easier than fitting a new one.
