Melting Bullet Lube

Has anyone considered using an old or cheap Mr Coffee type carafe and bottom warming base only for melting and pouring lube?
Or is the double boiler method significantly less damaging to the function of the lube?

Using a double boiler prevents the possibility of scorching your lube. Why take chances?

I prefer using the Double Boiler Ray and have done so since 1998. I also have two friends who left their lube unattended while it was melting and in both cases it started a very unwelcomed and serious fire for both. So be careful with what ever process you choose to use.

Have a friend that uses a coffee maker, and whatever brand his is, it limits temps to 180 degrees.

Still wouldn't want to walk away and forget it.

I've recently been using a toaster oven with a digital thermostat set to 175 degrees with a digital timer set up in my casting area in the garage. And I still don't go anywhere when I'm doing lube, just do other stuff around the garage, while it's melting, allows me to preheat the bullets when it's cold out.

The Coffee pot method has been working for me and the lube I use for thirty or so years just fine. It is a clean place to store it, has a handle and no drip pour spout and does not scorch the lube.

I would not do it if I were you if you think you will burn the lube or your house down.

I buy the coffee pots at GoodWill for a $1 like CW uses. I cut some 1.0" high  aluminum rings and put in bottom of pan with water. Slow boil till ready then cut the heat back and its ready when you are......cooked to perfection!

I use the Oven set at 200. This prevents direct heat then after I have done one batch I poke out the bullets put in fresh bullets and put the pan back in the oven

I use a hot plate that can be set to a very low heat.  It is a very slow process to melt.  Even a the very low setting. it seems to eventually discolor or char the lube.

I solved that problem setting a metal thingy similar to barbecue grill on the hot plate  to eliminate the direct contact between the heating element and the glass container. I put a large tin can over it to hold the heat and create an oven effect.

I hate double boiling, they boil dry if you look away for even a minute   Cry  That burns the lube!  If you are watching, you have to add more water just about the  time it is melted.  That sets you back about 20 minutes  Cry

There are many good way's to heat to melt Bullet Lube. But the safe and I think best is a double Boiler system. The reason it is in my mind the best is because most of the better working Lubes are Low temperature and are easily Burnt and spoiled if your attention lets you forget. I have given away more Pope Lube than I have ever used myself for shooters to try. Almost all have reported it worked well, but eventually do not mention it again. And if I ask the most common response is a sheepish reply that they had tried a quicker method of heating and had burnt the lube and it no longer worked as well and smelled burnt. I use a 2-quart saucepan on a hot plate with a 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup inside.  It holds plenty of water and I can easily melt enough for 100 bullets in an 8x8 cake pan.  Very high tech

I use the coffee warmer that the pot sits on to melt the lube.
It holds the lube well below the 212 degrees F that a double boiler will reach. So in that regard I feel like the coffee warmer I have is the safer way to go.

There are molecules of lube in that pot that are more then 30 years old and still going strong! Grin

Either double boiler or coffee warmer may work well. There are a lot of right ways to do something. I like the ease of just flipping a switch and having a carafe of lube to pour.  The Mister Coffee warmer I have just does not heat the whole lube pot much warmer than 175F. In the winter I have to put a cover in the front of the unit to block off the cold draft or that side of the pot will stay solid.

OLD TUCK, I have a question about that.  I'll start a new Pope Lube thread  to avoid hijacking this one  Wink

I use the "double boiler" method and do it out on my BBQ so if there is any chance of the lube igniting it is in a safe place outside and can be easily dealt with.
