was hoping to find a bargain on a modern Ballard at the most recent Rock Island Auction but everything sold for about full retail.

With all the talk about the decline in prices, I was surprised by what things at RIA brought. I thought prices were high.

Claiming that you can predict what prices an auction will achieve is much akin to claiming that you have a system that will always beat the tables in Vegas.

Still, regarding the above examples from the latest RIA sale. at least two factors were in play.  First, foremost, and generally speaking, prices cycle: up; plateau; down; "experts" declare "Now is the time to buy!", which people begin to do again.  Repeat.

Second, Ballard Rifle & Cartridge single shots, no longer made, are perhaps the most justifiably ballyhooed modern examples; the No. 6 and No. 7 models were their highest "standard" grades; and Wyoming Armory high-walls have a legitimate link to them in legacy and quality.

Ballard Rifle & Cartridge Company (Ballards) at retail?  Hell of a deal, I think. Good metal and typically fine workmanship and you can only get them in the markets where Marlin Ballards are sold. I’ve not seen any of them at retail in awhile. (OK, never).

Rock island gets about 18% from the seller and 18% from the buyer. So we being us kinda gets screwed!

By “retail” I meant current prices seen at dealers like Wyoming Armory. New ones are no longer being made but if they were I suspect they’d run at least $6k or more.

You are not being screwed as you go into the auction knowing you will pay 18% on top of your final price. How they charge the seller is absolutely irrelevant to the price you pay.

Overpriced?

All it takes is one glance at this rifle for one to immediately see that the component parts add to more than the price of $4,025.

Some estimates:

Stock blank:  $1,500
Action:  $1,500
Barrel blank:  $400
Sights:  $800

Now once you have bought these component parts, what are you going to pay the craftsmen who produce this work of art?  You are getting all of that for free, with no wait time.
