To size or not to size, that is the question

I understand that some (many?) of you think it is better not to size your bullets. You lube them and shoot as cast. I am not sure why you do this. Do you trust the mold to be more round than the sizing die? Mostly I use a Lyman sizer/ lubber. Mainly cuz it makes lubing easier, and (I know it is heresy ) but to seat the gas checks. Why gas checks? Because my molds are cut for them and I'm too cheap to buy a new mold when the one I have works just fine. I know, I can experiment with this my self, shoot 100 sized and 100 unsized, but life is too short for that when you guys have already done it. How do you shoot em and why?

Try shooting your gas check bullets without the gas checks
and lube them with large enough H&I die so as to only lube and not to size

I can give that a go, but I still don't understand why NOT to size. What am I giving up?

Schools of Thought:
Some  luber-sizers do not operate in a truly aligned manner
due to loose ram tolerances or due in some cases to poor line boring. So you can be sizing off center, instead of concentrically.
I have a couple of  Lyman H&I sizing dies for the luber sizer in which the bore is out of round by a couple of thousandths. That's a lot on a 30 caliber.
Granted, there are molds out there, particularly the "common" production molds  that cast out of round bullets. In some cases, IF you have a Good Luber-sizer and Good H&I dies, you can help make bullets more round, that is if they are large enough so you can squeeze them down
in your die to the desired diameter.
Third danger is if you are sizing down bullets quite a bit.
Again, Danger of distorting the bullet. swelling the nose, etc

I shoot mine in the order as cast and within 3 tenths by weight. If your rifles chamber is round so will the bullet become round. And if your chamber is out of round so will the bullet become out of round. When it comes to Bullet diameter from .001 thousandths over groove size up to .003 thousandths over groove size will all work just fine. In other words the diameter of a chambers freebore and leade in angle both act just like a sizing die.

I make all my own lube sizer top punches. I bore the nose out and wax a bullet then put steel epoxy putty in the top punch nose and then load the 2 in my lyman lubrisizer and gently lower the 2 down to sizing die, then every thing is in alignment. Having a perfect fit on the nose of the bullet prevents any distortion especially with a soft alloy. Have done the same thing to die seater plugs also. seems to work fine. I don't know of another way to fit the ogive exactly.

about a dozen years ago Tommy Mason told me even if the lubrasizer was oversized he's never gotten the accuracy he gets from pan lubing. Its hsrd to argue with his success.i size my bullets and also taper them in a press mounted bump due that fits my rifles throat with great results.i think its how you go about sizing. As long as you are not damaging the bullet and your technique makes it fit your chamber it's a win .

If sizing a couple thousandths over provides consistent results for you - imho you aren't giving up anything, and may very well be improving.
Sizing harder alloys below larger diameter, or in a bad die could though, try experimenting  and keep track of what works for you.
If something proves to work well for you  Grin. then that's all that really matters!

I pan lube, then run them thru a Lee lube sizer die.  But it is always good to try them unsized thru your gun also.....
