Breach seater

You've about got me talked into breach seating my 38-55 Highwall. I want to buy a new bullet mold anyway and might as well get a tapered one. I'm cheap and not too smart, but I am a pretty good thief. So how about posting pictures of simple breach seaters to give me ideas to copy.  Thanks.

A case with a brass plug is a simple way to try it out.

Here is the one that I made for myself. What is nice about it is all one has to do is to unscrew the seater case assembly and screw on another one. So this design can be used on a variety of  rifles without having to have a separate seater made for each one.

Here's the Pool seater I am  making for the  Highwall. Also adapted to the FBW, Hepburn and Borchardt with a different block. No anchor stud required.

Here are my High Wall seaters.  They are the cam style.  Insert and rotate the lug counter-clockwise and seat.  The one on the left was the first one I bought and converted from 30-30 to 32-40.  Next is a copy I made in aluminum currently set up for 28 cal.  The next one was Chuck Bordman's that I redid for 38-55.  The long one I haven't used yey and is spring-loaded.  The last one is a not so pretty work in progress made from a steel bar. I will be functional, but the next attempt will require a better shaping technique on the mill.

Stud use is a Schoyen design and it's unfortunate he wasn't vintage enough for some.

When looking for a design and possibly coming up with one of your own. There is allot more to a breach seater than just simply pushing a bullet into the bore. It has to be able to repeatably introduce the bullet to being perfectly centered / central to the bore as is humanly possible.  The importance of being able to do so is often overlooked more times than not and the best in  accuracy will indeed suffer. It is probably the most important tool that one has in his or her's competitive shooting box.

I keep mine in my non-competitive box, so it's all right. One's a pusher and the other is a Weber. I like 'em both.

Here is ole plug seater Chuck holding a few targets he shot using a plug seater.

Chuck had an unfettered mind and knew the bore aligns the bullet not the breech seater.

Being a none competitor and one who just wants to get it out to simply enjoy what he or she has is a very good thing. On the other hand if the OP's purpose is to get out and to become extremely competitive it then becomes the completely opposite of. Not knowing where or what the OP's intentions are and possibly just wanting to get the very best in accuracy out his or her rifle? It would then become just as important to do what the top competitors are doing as they are the ones who are out there and achieving extreme accuracy out their own.

Those are indeed some very nice targets shot by Chuck! But it also depends on how a chamber was cut and a plugged case might not be able to achieve the same. Chuck was also a step up from most and one of those at the top of the competitive benchrest game.
