Those are indeed some very nice targets shot by Chuck! But it also depends on how a chamber was cut and a plugged case might not be able to achieve the same. Chuck was also a step up from most and one of those at the top of the competitive benchrest game.

Chuck used a plugged case to shoot those targets.

Chuck seldom set out a wind flag. If he did it was just ribbon on a stick.

When it was calm he scored high. He always used a plugged case breech seater.

Five shots on a target proves absolutely nothing nor does three. It is unfortunate for anyone to take away from Chuck's abilities to try and prove a false point especially someone who claims to be his Friend?

How exactly does a plugged case push a bullet all the way into the barrel by 1/2 of the base band?  It seems to me that if you put a bullet in the chamber and push it in with a plugged case there is no alignment at all except the bore itself.  If you have a bore riding nose or a tapered bullet I can understand the bullet centering.  Not ever seen a plugged case in use it looks to me like a mechanical or push seater would be more precise but that is just my uneducated guess.  Tom    Shocked

Thanks all. I really appreciate all of the help and advice. I'm a long way from anyone to compete with, but we all know what Mr. Whelen said about interesting rifles. I don't think I'll be drilling holes or adding studs to my rifle, but like the idea of using the block recess to hold the plunger. I never would have thought of that.
Merry Christmas all.

Not sure how anyone can state loosing 6.6 points per target could be attributed to a means of breech seating a bullet. 1 maybe 2 or even possibly 3 even if using a plugged case is a bit of a stretch of the truth based on my own personal experience. Westerner I do believe is correct to point out what Chuck was able to accomplish by simply using a plugged case. It all boils down to how a rifle is chambered and to ones own personal abilities to get the most out of what he has to use.

Old Soldier I'm sure you will be very pleased with the accuracy improvement regardless of the breech seater you cook up.

The only thing I'd suggest is to breech seat a few bullets, knock them back out, and have a good look at how even the engraving is on the bullet's driving bands.

I can also recommend a bullet that shoots well for me in a few different .38-55's.  It's a pretty different design than what most use for schuetzen rifles but it works very well with both smokeless and BP.    They make a few versions with different dimensions:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

I use it with a few different designs of breech seaters, one of which is a home made very primitive setup.  It's a sliding plunger made of 0.375" brass rod, threaded on one side, and inserted into a dummy case.  I use jamb nuts to limit the travel. I think it has the ability to guide the bullet into the chamber reasonably well.

Chris.

Nice looking Bullet Chris! We all have had to start somewhere and when I first started out back around 1998. My first goal was to come in second to last for once in my life and it took me two years just to reach that first goal.

John I always thought it was a sort of weird hybrid bullet.  BPCR style nose and a tapered body for breech seating.  So far it shoots better than my Hoch Pope style bullet, and I'm not sure why to be honest.

I might even try to get Buffalo Arms to make a version of that bullet for my .32-40's to compare with my various other bullets.

Should also be a good choice for your 32-40 Chris. What I have experienced over the years is how much a small change in design. Can either have a positive or a negetive effect when facing the more harsh wind conditions. I have found the Spitzer design to not always be the most reliable choice for those times. But on the other hand it can also be the very best choice if one has not yet tried to find a more suitable design to take its place. We try different powders, primers, seating depth, alloys when doing load development and it's just as important to try other bullet designs.

Is it true that Mr. Weber is no longer making breach seaters, and if so, who is and how do I contact them?

Profuse thanks!
