I have a Cody Ballard in .38-55. Can I breech seat bullets in it?

I have a .38-55 Cody Ballard and have never fired anything in it but breech seated bullets. The loads I have used have been smokeless, straight black powder and duplex (small smokeless priming charge with remainder of case filled with black).
As a rule-of-thumb, breech seat bullets 1/16 inch ahead of case mouth or just far enough so the bullet base band is engraved 1/2 its width by the rifling lands. What you are after is for the bullet base band to completely fill the rifling grooves. That requires a bullet that is approximately .001 inch greater than groove diameter.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I have a Schoyen Ballard in .38-55 set up for false muzzle. Everyone told me it wont shoot well as a breech seater, or fixed cartridge. I've shot it both ways and it shoots breech seated very well. I use the old Ideal Doc Hudson tapered design bullet.
