Unique is too fast to get you optimum velocity for a given pressure.  3.0 to 3.2 grains would be a nice 1200 fps plinking load.  Load density is only 35%, an overcharge would be all too easy to miss.

I'd never recommend going past 4.0 grains of Unique with the 96 grain bullet I use, seated .487" deep in the case.  Deeper seating will run up the pressure fast in these small cases.

All assuming that the gun locks up tight. If the lever doesn't "snap" as it closes, it's not.  Very few survivors are.  I've installed oversize link pins in almost every one I've acquired.

My pet load is 6.2 to 6.3 grains of AA#9.

8 grains of 4227 was good, but not as good as the AA#9 in my rifles.  Not knocking it, it's a good powder for this size case, and easy to find, which the AA#9 isn't.

On the laptop screen 5 to 6 grains of Blue Dot looks interesting. Never tried it, but I might yet if my health improves.

Ramshot Enforcer and AA 4100 are supposed to be the same powder.  Again just looking at the computer model, about 7 grains should do it.

In a rifle stronger than the old 44, and using a harder GC bullet, you can boost any of those by 2 grains.  Allyn Tedmon was an advocate of 1800 fps smokeless loads in the .25-20 Stevens, and having fired quite a few at woodchucks from a 44 1/2 in years gone by, I can definitely agree.

It should do the same with nothing in the chamber.  Headspace is properly controlled by the depth of the rim recess and nothing else.  If the breechblock is squeezing the rim, accuracy may not be as good as it could be.

What brass are you using?  How thick are the rims?
