Schuetzen rifle #2 arrived ... 9.5x47R

OK, I finally got a chance to shoot some photos of Schuetzen number two that arrived recently.  This one is unmarked like the last one with just one single proof under the forearm on the barrel.  No makers name or distributor's name marked on it anywhere.  It has a cleaning rod hole through the rear sight, back of the action, and through the breach block that could come in handy on the range.  This one is chambered in 9.5x47R, which makes my third rifle in this calibre.  (I have another Schuetzen based on a Mauser 71 bolt action plus a break barrel single shot German Stalking rifle made in Dresden.)  The front sight is a replacement Parker Hale globe and it appears that someone has been a bit creative in adapting some "hardware" under the action (most likely for a thread on palm rest ?).  The bore is very good and it came supplied with 20 rounds of formed Bertram brass and two interesting looking home-made sight adjusting tools.  I suppose with three rifles in this calibre I should finally invest in a proper "stop ring" bullet mould to try in them.

Wink

Very nice rifle.  That hole through the rear sight and breechblock for a cleaning rod is a brilliant idea!

Those "home-made" sight adjusters are actually shop/factory-made winding keys for early weight-driven shelf clocks and some smaller wall clocks.  By the 1880s, however, spring-driven clocks with their "bat-wing" keys were the most common household clock.  So the old-style keys most often ended up in the backs of drawers or old parts boxes until someone who needed to turn a small square post got desperate, like one of your rifle's former owners.

Nowadays correctly-sized "bat-wing" keys can be bought from most internet vintage clock parts suppliers and most clock repair shops.  You can also likely get a two-in-one key that will fit all your posts with half the fuss.

Accurate Mold Stop ring design for 9.5 X 47R

Design came from German bullet catalog that a forum member posted when I was searching for the 9.5x47R bullet for my rifle. So sent the bullet dimensions to Accurate and here is the mold for this obsolete caliber

Yes, that is the mould that I was thinking of.  Do you just pan lube them and shoot them as cast?  If you run them through a conventional lube sizer it would wipe off the stop ring, which is the whole point of having that bullet.
Any tips on suggested 9.5x47R pet loads?  (I'd prefer to shoot low pressure, light smokeless loads that duplicate the original ballistics ... I hate cleaning black powder fouling ...)

Al:
* Pan lube the bullets
* The 9.5x47R , 210gr bullet is basically a 38 caliber, ie 38-55.  There is plenty of powder charges for the 38-55 that you might want to use.  Here are some ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

* If you EVER want to shoot the 'original gun powder' for the bullet, the charge I use is 42gr FFg (~ 1000 fps) because when the caliber was invented in 1880 - black powder was the original powder for load development and the caliber died out 20 years later close to the development of smokeless
And be sure to anneal your cases because Bertram brass is drawn not lathe brass.  Plus if the Bertram's 'go south' on you, Roberson Ctg Co has lathe turned brass for $4.77 each ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Now - get busy because we are expecting to see how this new rifle performs

Yeah, I guess I need to get off my butt and order that proper mould.  I do have several .38-55 moulds already (since I have several .38-55's), but it would be better to have the proper bullet for the job.  (Especially since I have 3 different rifles in 9.5x47R now.)  Do you use SPG or a home-brew bullet lube?  I generally pan lube for some of my other rifles using a 50/50 mix of beeswax and Crisco with a tiny bit of olive oil added if I want it a bit softer.

Yes, I tend to anneal pretty much all of the brass I reload and shoot even if it's not Bertram, but like most folks I have a "love/hate" relationship with Bertram since they offer calibres of brass that are tough to get, but they are also made from a horrible, brittle brass alloy and I've had lots of splits and case failures with Bertram brass.  (And at about $4 to $5 cost PER case I really HATE having case failures!)  Some of the brass I already have for my other two rifles was made from shortened .43 Mauser cases, mostly reformed from "Dominion" .43 Mauser brass since I'm up here in Canada and it still shows up from time to time at our gun shows.  (And it lasts WAY better than Bertram brass!)

I'll probably stick with light smokeless loads in all 3 rifles.  Again, I hate dealing with black powder fouling in the guns and in the brass, but you just never know.  I might eventually try some loads with BP if the smokeless isn't shooting up to my expectations.  I do have some BP on hand for a few muzzle-loaders that I have, I just dislike loading it in cartridge guns.

Might take me a little while to actually get it out shooting.  I'm in the process of down-sizing some of my project guns (that I'll never get around to) and a few vintage military bolt actions and replacing them with more single shots.  I have lots of rifles to load ammo and work up loads for these days ... sigh ...

Thanks for the help and suggestions on dealing with the 9.5x47R cartridge!

Oh ... by the way ... I have another Winchester High Wall in .32-40 in transit to me right now, plus I'm in the process of buying an original Sharps 3 band military rifle in .50-70.

What can I say?  It's an addiction ...

Be careful with that Dominion 43 Mauser brass. Micro cracks can develop in some of them from the head through to the primer pocket. I have some photos somewhere.

Yes, they need to be checked carefully when you reload them ... they are the old balloon head style cases ...

Looks like a great design. Any feedback from folks who have used that bullet?

Al, is there a reason you feel this caliber needs a stop ring bullet? If the chamber accepts a properly sized bullet in those cases, then no reason to mess with stop ring bullets.
