The uniqueness of Unique

I'm sure Unique was named for its capability of being used in such a wide range of cartridges, however I must report, somewhat shamefacedly, I discovered another unique property of it. If you turn over a Harrell's measure to remove the bottle which is half full of Unique and you haven't put the blue plug in said bottle, the Unique can take wings and fly! Everywhere, all over, into everything, on everything, in your lap. And, its quantity expands exponentially! Really amazing and quite Unique. I do not plan to repeat the experiment for the benefit of U-Tube or some similar mass audience sharing app, thank you.

I've began to use Winchester WSF, which is a ball powder and is the approximate equivalent of Unique. It has about the same buring rate and is somewhat cleaner, but as always, your milage may vary.  Roll Eyes

May well give that a try after I use up my 12 lbs. of Unique, may take a little while though. Grin

Most of the charts and the talk say WSF is more like Herco, for what that is worth.

Unique was one of the first powders I ever loaded with, and still one of my favorites! Haven't tried the flying powder act with it, but sounds a bit messy.

Static cling as we get into the cold , dry air weather.
I have a  bared copper light cord I loop around the plastic hopper of my powder measure and ground to my electrical system
seems to help reduce those grains from crawling around.

If Unique expands like that, I might try to carefully spill some everytime the stock starts getting low.

Years ago, a staff writer for the magazine I was editing pitched an article on Unique. It struck me as a pretty narrow topic, but infact, it proved to be one of his most interesting!

In the article, he explained that there is a reference sample of Unique from one of the earliest production lots. It is kept stored in water (!) and from time to time a small sample is dried out and tested to ensure current batches are true to the original performance standard.

This was 20-some years ago, so perhaps the practice has been abandoned, but I found that quite fascinating!

When I started reloading in the 70's my mentor discussed Unique with me. One of his comments has always stuck, just because it was humorous. He said, "I think Moses used Unique in his loads."
He said a lot of his oldest loading manuals had loads for Unique.

Prior to Obama's first election, I read the writing on the wall and started stocking up on among other things Unique. It may not be the best in anything, but it's pretty durn good in most everything. I use it in all of my handguns, and many of my rifles with cast bullets. If I can only buy 1 powder, I'll buy Unique.
