my friend had a 25-20 that would not shoot until he used harder bullets. in his case linotype made it come alive.it was an older gun with a good but not great bore.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

4198 is a poor choice for the .25-20 WCF in my opinion. The Unique load might be a bit more than needed and maybe try around 4.0 grs., or as you mentioned a lighter bullet with that same 4.5-5.0 grs.
2400 is another good powder to try, and around 6.5 grs. with your 90 gr. bullet.

Have you checked your twist rate for the barrel?

Is it in .25-20 WCF or .25-20 Single Shot?

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...

Drop down to a lighter bullet. My original low wall does not like anything over 70 gr.
