	I'm pleased to announce that Wes Cowan's upcoming auction on 10/30/19 has 4 or 5 real Popes and 2 Stevens-Popes, at least a couple of which, if I've read between the lines correctly, were once in Claude Roderick's and/or John Miller's famed collections. In light of the hornet's nest that the recent Morphy-Julia auction stirred up, I will be taking notes. But perhaps some of you might consider bidding, as the fabled $1500.00 Pope now seems a real possibility. Bill Lawrence

	well Bill, not really. Only one Stevens Pope had a minimum bid of $1500 and with the vig, it's $1800 at least. Not sure if HMP was even working there then, but while they are fine rifles, to me they are PINO's. My hopes are dashed for this auction, but I'm sure someone on the forum will sell me one given the recent discussion on their real value. Aaron I did bid on a nice Greener takedown .22

	Actually, Aaron, there are at least two other Pope-barreled guns that don't show up on a "Pope" search, mostly because Cowan's cataloger is hardly the best. Also, the Stevens-Pope with the $1500 starting bid is a muzzle-loader with matching false muzzle and starter, and # 568 is well within the range of barrels made when Pope worked for Stevens (05/1901-12/1905). And it's a Model 49 in extremely fine overall condition and with exceptionally nice wood. So while I understand your stance, Aaron, some things are worth a little hurtin' money, as my father used to say. Bill Lawrence

	Looking at the #7 Ballard something doesn't look right with the H.M.Pope Stamp. and the Stevens 49 it looks recolorerd Ken

	What does "PINO" mean? I think we need a glossary of abbreviations here so I can look up these things!

	PINO = Pope in Name Only? My guess anyway. Sort of like RINO only an entirely different context.

	I did bid on that Stevens Pope rifle Bill, it's a fine one even if it's not the Pope I want to own eventually. Can't seem to shake this SS sickness, but I get such a sense of history and wonder where and how these old girls were used. It's a great hobby and a whole lot easier than downhill skiing for us older guys.! Aaron

	Any Stevens-Pope rifle with a serial number low enough to be built when HM Pope was employed there is certainly not a PINO barrel! He was directly responsible for every barrel built during his time there, so they are no less a Pope than any other Pope barrel made away from Stevens factory. Now those made after he left could be described as PINO, since Ross made them and Stevens simply stamped them the same. But Ross built Stevens-Pope barrels are every bit as good as those made before Pope left. Ross doesn't get credit for being a very fine barrel maker, but he was taught by and worked with Pope before he ever joined Stevens.

	I agree with you Vall, but I'd like one done in Pope's own shop with his equipment. Others of his barrels may shoot as good or better, but the idea of one of those from that part of his life means a lot to me. I have a few personal hero's for their accomplishments, John Browning, Einstein, Ed Womsley, and HM Pope among them. This pic of Pope speaks a lot to me and I want a rifle from that era of his life. Aaron (please don't tell me it's a pic at Stevens)

	It's a great hobby and a whole lot easier than downhill skiing for us older guys.! Right on, Brother Aaron! Also, for what it's worth, since Stevens bought his tools, etc. as part of hiring Pope, those Stevens-Pope barrels made under Pope's supervision are only by location significantly different from those made " ... in Pope's own shop". And that cover photo was taken in Pope's Jersey shop, long after he left Stevens. Bill Lawrence

	Thanks Bill, and yes, Pope's own shop. I know others may think differently, but I think of him working alone late at night doing his best and finest. Certainly the point can be argued, but it is, after all, my choice. Aaron
