try it and see how it shoots.   Gives you an excuse to shoot the rifle.   I've never tried 4198 in that small of a caliber and think that 4227 would work a lot better.

7-7.5 grains 4227. Have never been able to any accuracy with anything over 70 grain bullet in original 1885 low wall.

I’m watching this thread with interest. I’m hoping I can assemble my low wall with Green Mtn barrel in 25-20 SS during the Winter.  This is a project that has been on the back burner so long I’ll have to really scramble to find all the parts.  One decision I’ll need to make has to do with the wood, ie can I make a restoration of some of the original lumber I’ve got laying around, or go with fresh walnut.

Back to the loading question, how about 2400?  I’ve seen lots of drips and drabs of info about loads for this round, but I’ve honestly never seen a nice thorough compendium of load data for the round.  Let’s expand this thread to do that!  How about it you Quarter Bore-ers?

I tried 2400 in my 25-20 SS but found that 4227 shot much better.

Plumb and Froggie, you'll find that folks are shooting a lot of heavier bullets than what was originally supplied for the rifle. Also a lot of folks are shooting from new barrels that have faster twists than the older rifles and they may be shooting even heavier bullets. That said, most seem to do OK with the 85 or 88 grain bullets for the 25-20 Winchester and your rifle will never know the difference between 88 and 90 if it likes that bullet. My Schoyen-Peterson mold drops at 77 grains so that is what those ODGs were using. Something like 2400 or 4227 would be commonly used but if yours turns out liking 4198, go for it.

The best load I have found for 85-90 grain bullets shot from a .25-20SS is 8.5 grains of IMR4227. This is the recommended load shown in the Lyman loading manual. I have found it easy to stabilize these bullets in 14 Inch twist barrels such as on Winchesters. I've even had them work in a .25-20SS Maynard with 15 inch twist. I don't understand why there is a group of people who cannot get an 85 grain bullet to stabilize in a 14 inch twist. Maybe their bullets are too small in diameter or they are using a load that is too light.

For a historical perspective, here is a scan of 25-20SS loading data from my

Interesting, but I wonder how many rifles (other than the high walls and 44 1/2 Stevens) got cracked or shot loose with some of that data.

Shell holder for 25-20 SS no longer made and most people use the one  for a .223 which may be what you have.
